Margie Kulhanek Polach Halfmann, 88, of Columbus, peacefully passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Margie was born April 30, 1931 in the Santa Anna Community to Albert and Annie (Tomastik) Kulhanek. Margie was the youngest of 11 siblings. Margie married John J. Polach June 4, 1951. From this union they were blessed with three children.

Margie and John owned and operated John’s Restaurant (later to be known as Cattlemen’s Restaurant) for many years, providing homemade dishes and pies to their many patrons. On Dec. 7, 1979, several years after John’s unexpected death, Margie married Joe Halfmann.

She loved playing cards and dominoes with her sisters and traveling east for gambling fun with friends and family. But she was heard many times saying that her greatest joy in life was raising her children.

Margie and Joe canned many of the vegetables Joe grew in his garden including pickles, tomatoes, red beets and picante sauce just to name a few. Above all, she enjoyed cooking and feeding whoever would come by for a visit. You could not stop by without having a feast of some kind before you left.

Margie was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She is survived by her husband Joe, children Sandra Leopold and husband Gary, John J. Polach, Jr. and Susan Trojacek and husband Glennon all of Columbus. Grandchildren Nicholas Leopold and wife Sarah of Lampasas; Jenny Leopold Hanus and husband Bryan of Corpus Christi; Brittney Leopold Norris and husband Dusty of Plano; Hannah Trojacek Mica and husband Bryce of Flatonia and Austin Trojacek and Bay Guentert of Columbus.

Sisters and brothers-in-law: Anton Halfmann, Gladys Stolle, Ellen Vasek, Virginia Faldyn, Jurline Huebel, Janice Kasmiersky and husband Sonny, Raymond Halfmann and wife Sharon and Dianne Seidel and husband Edwin, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
