Clois “Lee” Hanus, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Columbus Oct. 19 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He kept his well-known sense of humor to the very end. He previously resided in Navasota, Tomball and Deer Park. Four children, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren survive him.

Lee enlisted in The National Guard at the age of 15 with permission from his father. In 1951, he transferred into the United States Marine Corps and retired as a Captain with 20 years of active service and another 10 years in the reserves. During his tenure in the U.S. Marine Corp, Lee was stationed in California, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Hawaii, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

After serving our country honorably, Lee became a member of Pipefitters Local Union 211 in Houston and worked in Lima, Peru for Occidental Petroleum Company and retired as a supervisor after 22 years.

In 1954 he married Billie Ann Wilks and they had four children, Phillip Michael, Deborah Lynn, Timothy Lee, and Thomas Alan.

His wife Billie Ann Ha-nus, who passed in February 2000, his parents Adolph, Jr. and Evelyn Hanus, and his brothers Arthur Noel Hanus and Jerry Thomas Hanus preceded Lee in death. Lee will be laid to rest next to his wife Billie Ann, following a private service in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.

Lee enjoyed researching and planting different varieties of Texas native flowering plants and trees, and landscaping his yard. In his later years, he enjoyed watching old Western Movies, reading, sitting outside with his cat Little Bit and beloved dogs Cookie and Zuma, and frequent visits from his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lee is survived by his children; son Phillip Michael Hanus and wife Gaylynne, daughter Deborah Lynn Wahlberg and husband Lennard, son Timothy Lee Hanus and wife Kay, and son Thomas Hanus Crawford and husband Michael.

Lee’s grandchildren are Timothy Ryan Ha-nus and wife Katie, Latisha Renee Kristynik and husband Shaun, Justin William Wahlberg and wife Lauren, Heather Anne Redmann and husband Jeff, Janel Lee Barten and husband Jacob, and Sean Michael Hanus. His nephews are Arthur Hanus and Jerry Hanus.

His great grandchildren are, in order of their parents; Ruby and Amelia Hanus, Cameron and Hope Hutto, Jaxon, Jacie, James and Jordyn Wahlberg, Levi Redman, and Cambry, Camdin, Callen and Cort Barten.

The family is very grateful to the professional caregivers who helped Lee in the last year of his life. The tireless work and heartfelt kindness of Shelia Toliver and Hazel Smallwood, as well as Shellie Ford and Vanessa Williams and others at Compassionate Care Hospice who helped the family during this very difficult time.
