Charles Eugene Harbich of Mentz passed away at the age of 69 on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021.

Charlie was born July 4, 1952, in El Campo to Eugene and Jocelyn (Hennecke) Harbich. He attended Bernardo School through eighth grade and graduated from Columbus High School in 1970. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1974 with a degree in Mechanized Agriculture and Agronomy. He married Teresa Woodson on Oct. 16, 1976. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past October. Charlie was a diesel injection pump specialist at Eagle Lake Implement until he became a full-time rancher and hay farmer in the early 1990s.

In 1984, Charlie was invited back to the Texas A&M campus to give the keynote address at the annual Mechanized Agriculture Banquet. In 1987 he received the Texas Family Land Heritage Award, recognizing his efforts in maintaining and expanding agricultural ventures for E Bar Ranch, the land that had been in his family since 1860.

Charlie was active in the Colorado County Chapter of Texas Farm Bureau throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, serving in multiple officer roles on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Texas Chapter of the American Gelbvieh Association in the early 1990s.

Cooking for others was a passion for Charlie, and he was a decades-long member of the cooking teams for the annual Bernardo Fire Department Picnic, St. Roch Catholic Church Picnic, and St. Roch Catholic Church Knights of Columbus.

Charlie is survived by his wife Teresa, and his daughters Melissa Houser, Jessica Hill (Jeremy), and Casey Mitchell (Ryan). He is also survived by his grandchildren Ty and Trey Houser and Audrey and Caleb Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. at St. Roch Catholic Church in Mentz. Deacon Doug Tromblee will be officiating. Visitation at church will be from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Roch Catholic Cemetery in Mentz. The family requests all those in attendance wear a mask or facial covering.

Pallbearers are John Buxkamper, Brent Patterson, Jeremy Hill, Ryan Mitchell, Will Schneider, and Daniel Baranowski.
