Jean Elizabeth Toland, 64, of Boerne, Texas, passed away, Feb. 16, 2023. She was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, on Dec. 21, 1958, to John and Betty Linden. Her family moved to Houston in 1971.

She graduated Class Favorite from Robert E. Lee High School in Houston in 1976. Jean pursued her passion for teaching English and graduated from S.W.T.S.U. in 1980 with a Liberal Arts degree in English and a master’s degree in 1992. She married the love of her life and soulmate William “Bill” Toland in 1980. They were blessed that Columbus I.S.D. hired them both, where they taught for 25

years. Many of her students became her best friends that she loved and cherished. She was born with a caring soul that she shared with the world, a deep love of dogs and a steadfast loyalty to her friends and family.

Jean was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbus.

In 2005, Boerne I.S.D. hired Jean as the AP Senior English Teacher and Lead Writing Teacher for the district. Retiring in 2011, she continued her role as L.W.T. part time until 2013. Jean loved antiques and she started a booth at John’s Road Antique Mall. She loved her two days a week behind the counter and her visits with all the vendors. Always the avid reader, it was normal for her to read two to three books a week. She enjoyed traveling and seeing the world which she did every summer.

All that knew Jean were aware of the many battles with cancer that she overcame. An inspiration on how important faith and a positive attitude are in recovering.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sweet dog Blackie. She is survived by her husband, William Toland; sister, Jan Barber; two nephews, Matt Barber and Jonathan Barber.

Per her wishes, no formal services will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held March 18 at 1 p.m. at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home in Boerne, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Susan G. Komen. To leave condolences for the family, please visit www.ebensberger-fisher. com. Arrangements with Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home of Boerne.
