Orvil Louis “Lou” Lewellen, of Sheridan, passed away Feb. 16 in Houston.

He was born July 3, 1931 to Orvil Lewellen and Adeline (Caffall) Lewellen in Cairo, IL.

Lou was a serviceman at heart. He served in the United States Navy from 1949-1955, which included serving in the Korean War.

Lou spent most of his young adult life in California and worked for US Shipping Lines. California is where he met and married his late wife Dorothy Lewellen. Lou and Dorothy served as Red Cross medical staff volunteers for the 1984 Olympics and then they moved to Texas in 1986.

Lou was a member of the Rock Island Volunteer Fire Department and served as their Fire Chief for several years. He worked as a security guard for many years at The Falls Golf Course in New Ulm and devoted himself to being a first responder. Lou was an endowed member of Lyons Masonic Lodge No. 195 AF&AM in Schulenburg. He was a Ham radio operator and loved all his gadgets and rain and wind gauges.

He was preceded in death by his parents Orvil Lewellen and Adeline Lewellen; his beloved wife Dorothy “Dottie” Lewellen; and brother Jack Caffall.

Lou is survived by daughters Carol Lewellen of North Carolina, Loretta Cameron of Columbus, and Jacqueline Hartil and husband Bill of Washington; sons James Lewellen and wife Donna of California, Joseph Lewellen and wife Alice of Minnesota; 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. Sister-in-law and long time friend, Joyce Caffall of College Station, and son-in-law Dave Cameron of Wharton also survive him.

Visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 22 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus.

Graveside service was Tuesday, Feb. 22 at Myrtle Cemetery in Rock Island with Pastor Allen Tangler officiating.

Pallbearers were Douglas Cameron, Jacob Scarbrough, Trenton Shupak, Dylan Shupak, Michael Garvin, and Rick Hedenberg.
