MARGARET JANE MCCANE
Margaret Jane McCane (Rutherford) was born in Amarillo, Texas and lived a long, eventful life, passing at age 89 in Houston, Texas on March 24, 2023. Jane had a warm spirit that drew people to her and she thrived when interacting with others from clerks at the department store to family and friends she knew all her life. She never met a stranger! She had a lively sense of humor that shone in the twinkle in her eyes and the warmth of her smile.
Jane’s journey began in Amarillo, Texas where she was born to William Randolph Rutherford and Marguerite May Wiman on April 26, 1933. Jane grew up in Dumas, Texas as the oldest of four siblings, Carole (Kay), William Randolph Jr. (Randy), and Marguerite (Margie) Rutherford. She graduated from Dumas High School. Her dad, “Bill” Rutherford, owned and published the Moore County News. Growing up as the daughter of a newspaper man helped her choose her vocation. Jane earned her B. A. in Journalism from the University of Houston, serving as Class President and editor of the school newspaper. After graduating from the University of Houston, Jane became a reporter with the Amarillo Globe News.
Jane met her future husband, David Archer Mc-Cane, on a ski trip. Dave and Jane were united in matrimony on April 19, 1958. The young couple established their first home in Everett Washington where Dave was stationed at an Air Force Base. Texas drew them back after he fulfilled his military duty. They settled in Dumas Texas where Jane shared her love of the outdoors by leading her younger sister’s Girl Scout Brownie troop and various community and church activities. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Dave’s job moved the couple to Amarillo, Texas, where they began their family. Jane was a devoted mother and homemaker to her sons, Charles and Keith McCane and her niece, Kathleen Archer. The years were full of devotion to her family and community. She was a long time member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where she was an active volunteer in Sunday School, United Methodist Women, and Vacation Bible School. Volunteering as a Girl Scout leader was another way she contributed to her community.
Upon retirement, she and David moved to Lake LBJ near Marble Falls, Texas. Her lakefront home was always bustling with family and friends who enjoyed her humor and hospitality. Eventually, the couple moved to Katy to be closer to family. Once again, she shared her grace and love with her family, neighbors, and church. She had a special place in her heart for the Care Team ministry at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church.
Jane is survived by her husband, David of Houston, her children, Charles of Lewisville, Keith and his sons, Jackson and Tanner of Katy, Kathleen, her husband Dave, and their children Rachel of Napier, New Zealand, Adrian of Tyler, and Alex of Houston, and her sister, Marguerite Stevenson of Amarillo. She will be greatly missed by many other people who love her including nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family held a visitation at Katy Funeral Home, 23350 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas. 77494 on April 1, 2023 from 1-4 p.m.
The Memorial service will be at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, 20775 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas. 77450 on April 15, 2023 at 10 a.m.
