Barbara Jean Taylor, of Rock Island, passed away Nov. 9 at the age of 75. She was born in Eagle Lake Feb. 6, 1944 to Cecil Sumner and Gladys Corenne (Speck) Owers.

Barbara grew up in Rock Island, graduating from Rock Island High School. When her children were young, they were members of Assembly of God in Rock Island. Later in life, Barbara attended Rock Island Full Gospel Church.

She maintained a strong relationship with the Lord throughout her lifetime. She was active in the Rock Island Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and started the Bingo that continues there to this day.

She worked as a caretaker for many years. Barbara enjoyed painting and drawing and was quite a talented artist. She loved the outdoors and spent many hours working in her garden and flower beds. She raised vegetables and always had enough to share with her friends and neighbors. Barbara enjoyed hunting, and many cold mornings she would walk along creeks checking live traps or sitting in a blind. She could can or freeze anything you brought to her, so her family and friends’ pantries were always full.

When she became legally blind she started raising cacti, because she could feel those. She spent many hours riding the roads of Rock Island on her little golf cart when she could no longer drive a car. It was no surprise to occasionally hear that Barbara had gotten herself into trouble going someplace she probably wasn’t supposed to be, just to collect a plant she admired. There wasn’t much she couldn’t do when she set her mind to it, and she definitely passed that trait on to her children and grandchildren.

Barbara will forever be missed by her children, Theresa Huggins (the favorite, that’s why she only had one girl, also because I’m writing this and I said so) and husband Alan, Andrew Taylor (the middle child and most spoiled, also mom’s favorite…because he says so) and wife Susan, and Rueben Taylor (the baby that could never do wrong…. also mom’s favorite…because he says so) and wife Judy, all of Rock Island; grandchildren Kristen Escobar, Amy Huggins, A.J. Huggins and wife Emily, Alan Taylor and wife Marrissa, Laura Taylor and Alyssa Taylor; and great grandchildren Leelan Lucio, Kase Huggins, baby girl on the way, Sloane Huggins, Lane Taylor, Rebel Taylor, baby boy on the way Cohl Taylor and Elizabeth Lyn Ladner, as well as numerous nieces and nephews that she loved.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Lonnie and Lee Roy Owers.

A memorial service will be Friday Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Rock Island Full Gospel Church with Calvin Harris officiating.

Memorials may be given to Rock Island Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 124, Rock Island, TX. 77470.
