COLUMBUS GIRLS SOCCER DEFEATS ROYAL, SIX TO ONE

Junior April Sanchez scored the first goal with 28:12 remaining in first half. Royal’s goalkeeper was unable to hold on to the ball and Sanchez was able to kick the loose ball into the open net. This started a series of quick scores for the girls.

Sophomore Brittany Vasquez added another goal with 26:45 remaining. Junior Jessica Elias added one with 21:54 remaining.

Vasquez scored again with 16:40 remaining, with an assist from senior Leti Murga. Sanchez was able to get in one more score before halftime with four seconds remaining on the clock, with an assist from Elias. Columbus led five to zero at halftime.

Royal scored it’s only goal with 33:28 remaining in the second half.

Elias scored one more goal with 12:14 remaining when she knocked in a direct kick from outside of the eighteen (a.k.a. penalty area).

Freshman goalkeeper Remi Val-lone had six saves on seven shots.

“The girls played well. We were coming off of a rough week with two very narrow losses, so it felt good to get back on the winning side. Our ball movement was good, and we got a lot of girls involved on the offensive side.

“It was a very positive, fun game to play. We got to rest some of the starters in the second half, most of whom are pretty beat up at this point of the season. All of the girls got to play at least a little bit, which is always good. It’s hard to get everybody playing time in a varsity game, so it’s great to get these girls some minutes and hear the starters cheering them on from the bench.”
