The Columbus Cardinals opened up their district game in a 42-15 blow-out win against the Hitchcock Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 9. It was an all-around game for the Cardinals offense and defense. The Columbus offense led by senior quarterback No. 10, Ty Thomas who threw the ball effectively against the Bulldog defense. Thomas completed 9 of 14 pass attempts for 207 yards with 2 touchdowns. Senior running back No.2, Kion Hurd continued to force his will on the ground, following twice behind his offensive line as the Cardinals took a 21-7 lead by half time. Hurd would find the end zone once more during the second half to give him 3 touchdowns for the night. Senior wide receivers No. 6, Kaycon Wilson, and No. 11, Carson Wray would add to the scoreboard with both players hauling in touchdown receptions from Thomas. The Cardinals defense forced the Hitchcock offense to turn the ball over twice with one turnover leading to an acrobatic diving catch by senior safety No. 17, Jessie Upson. Kaycon Wilson would come up with a game-sealing interception late in the fourth quarter against the Bulldog offense. The play of the night featured senior wide-out No.4 Ryan Barnes who returned a failed, onside kick attempt by Hitchcock for 55 yards. That play led to the rally-party touchdown for the Cardinals, giving them their first district win of conference play. It was an all-around effort for the Columbus Cardinals from their offense, defense, and special teams. The Columbus Cardinal Varsity football team will be back in action in an away conference match-up against the top 10 ranked Yoakum Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
