Columbus beats Bastrop twice for Sectional victory

The Columbus Little League Major All-Stars have booked their ticket to the state tournament level of the little league season after finding some big wins in Sectionals. The girls earned their spot in sectionals after taking two-straight wins in the district tournament against Sealy Little League, meaning they were well-equipped for the sectional tournament that included just one other team in the bracket. Columbus thoroughly outplayed Bastrop Little League as the teams engaged in a best-of-three series to determine who would move on to the next level. The Columbus Major girls responded with two of their best performances of the season so far to take the series in two straight wins to claim the Sectional Championship.

Game 1, W, 20-4

The Major All-Stars put on a hitting masterclass against Bastrop in the first game of the series to decide the Sectional Champ. They finished with 16 hits as they buried their opponents with a steady stream of base hits. Columbus also had some explosive innings with strong offensive performances in the first and third. The Major All-Stars scored seven runs in the first inning and followed up their performance with a game-high 13 runs in the third inning to force a mercy-rule finish. Columbus took advantage of Bastrop mistakes and turned them into runs as the offense dominated to pick up the game one victory.

Braylin Gonzalez had a huge impact for the offense, knocking in six runs for the offense with two hits after an insidethe- park grand slam homerun in the third inning that helped Columbus break open the scoreboard.

Mckenna Eden got the start on the mound and earned the win after throwing eight strikeouts and allowing just a single run and a single hit in three innings of work.

Game 2, W, 17-0

Columbus found a similar level of success in their next game to clinch the Sectional Championship. They had a much more even spread of scoring across their three innings played as they still quickly ran up the score. The All-Stars came out with the perfect start to the game, picking up hits in their first five at-bats and an RBI pop fly in their sixth to push the score to a 4-0 advantage. They finished the first inning with six runs on the scoreline before adding eight more runs in the second and an additional three in the third to put the game on ice.

Cambry Barten had a top offensive performance for Columbus, picking up hits in each of her three at-bats, two of which were doubles. She finished with four RBIs to lead the team.

Mckenna Eden and Berkeley Anderson shared pitching duties in this game. They combined for five strikeouts while allowing just two total hits and holding Bastrop to a shutout.

The All-Stars move on to take on take on the Texas East State Tournament starting July 14 in El Campo.
