The varsity football programs of Colorado County are preparing to play their final snaps of preseason action as they take on the second of two scrimmages before the regular season officially begins next week. Every team will be facing off against some nearby neighbors as Columbus takes on Sealy High School while Weimar and Rice face each other.

Columbus takes on a Sealy team that had a mixed bag of performances last season. The Tigers finished in third place in their district after taking a 4-2 record in district play. Most of their wins came from the district portion of the schedule as they struggled with their non-district opponents. Sealy won just a single game outside of their district in four attempts.

Not only did the Tigers perform much better against their district opponents, but they were also dominant as they finished many games with big margins of victory. Their biggest win came against Sweeny in a 57-0 win that settled in the middle of a three-game streak of scoring 50 or more points. Sealy averaged over 34 points per game including the playoffs as they reached the Area round of the postseason before falling in a blowout loss to Cuero.

Columbus will get to prepare for the season by playing the Tigers on Thursday, Aug. 17.

The Weimar Wildcats and the Rice Raiders will face off against each other in Weimar as both teams are looking to show some improvement this season.

The teams matched each other in the record book from last year as they both finished with a 3-7 record overall. They also matched each other in their district competition as they finished with just one win each in their six district games.

Each of these teams are searching for different areas of improvement that they are hoping to see against each other.

The Raiders are hoping they can improve their offensive consistency on the ground behind their lead back Dyren Johnson. They found some stretches of good play through their rushing attack last year, but they are hoping another year of experience increases their efficiency and effectiveness.

For the Wildcats, rushing the ball has never been the issue as they relied on the rushing attack heavily throughout their 2022 season. This season, they will be looking to increase the production on the passing game both on offense and defense. The Wildcats want to incorporate a more varied offense to keep defenses guessing while also limiting opposing offenses passing attack.

The Raiders are a team that boasted a balanced attack in their offense with a senior quarterback under center to go along with their rushing attack.

Both teams will be trying to finish the preseason with a strong performance against each other before they move on to their respective regular seasons.
