Lady Cardinals soar in Regional Quarterfinal

The Columbus Lady Cardinals traveled to Seguin High School on Monday, Nov. 6, and defeated the Jourdanton Lady Squaws to advance in the Class 3A bracket.

The Lady Cardinals won the match in four sets to advance and were tested for the first time in a while.

In their last ten games, the Lady Cardinals did not lose a single set to any of their opponents. Jourdanton showed why they were in the position they were in and were able to win a set against the stout Lady Cardinals defense.

The start of the match was extremely tight with neither team giving an inch and both teams executing their systems on offense and defense to perfection. The teams rapidly approached that 25-point mark to end the set and they both remained in attack mode.

Leading that attack for the Lady Cardinals was Ally Tribe who had 48 total attacks at the net. Along with Ember Mandola and Taylor Morrow who had 23 and 20 total attacks which helped the Lady Cardinals offense late in the first set.

The Lady Cardinals won the first set 25-21 and the Lady Cardinals were ready to take flight. They came out in the second set looking to fully unleash their offense. The Lady Cardinals offense came out in the second set and was a buzz saw.

Tribe, Mandola and Morrow were the heart of the Lady Cardinals offense on Monday night leading the match in kills. Tribe slammed down 19 kills Monday night and her teammates fed off of her effort.

Mandola was right behind Tribe, having 10 kills in the match, followed by Morrow who had six kills in the match. All of this combined with stellar communication and defense in the second set led to another win in the second set 25-15 for the Lady Cardinals.

The third set was where the Lady Cardinals lost their first set in the last ten games dropping the set 17-25. Jourdanton came into the third set looking to keep their season alive and went toe-totoe with the number one ranked volleyball team in the state.

With the loss behind them the Lady Cardinals knew they had to respond if they wanted to keep their push for the State Championship going. The fourth set saw the Lady Cardinals respond in a huge way beating Jourdanton 25-17 to end the match.

The Lady Cardinals look ahead to their next matchup against Goliad on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Blossom Athletic Center where they will try to secure a spot in the State Championship game.
