The Lady Cards are in the midst of a winning streak after taking a pair of match wins during last week’s competition. As Columbus enters the district portion of the schedule, the Lady Cards are hoping the experience of playing larger schools will help them take another district championship. Columbus has maintained their spot as one of the top teams in the state with the eighth-place ranking in the TGCA poll and a fourth-place ranking in the AP poll. They will try to keep that level of play throughout the rest of the season to give themselves a chance to take the top spot in the district.
Vs Victoria West, W, 3-1
The Lady Cards started their week with a difficult victory against Victoria West as each game following the first set saw both teams score over the 20-point mark. Columbus snatched the first set with a blowout win. They came out with a strong defensive effort and held their opponents to less than 15 points in 25-13 victory. They followed up with a 25-20 win in game two to establish a big advantage in the match. Victoria West responded with a tight victory in game three, taking a 26-24 win over Columbus to force a fourth game. The Lady Cards held on for another tight win in game four as they took a 25-23 win to claim the match.
Caylie Neisner led the defensive effort on a day with several players finishing in double digits for digs. She led the team with 21 digs followed by Ashly n Carter and Ally Tribe with 14 and 13 digs respectively. Sophia Wolters nearly breeched the double-digit threshold with nine digs.
On offense, Ally tribe led the way with one of her highest kill totals of the season. She finished with 26 kills to lead the team followed by Taylor Morrow, Ember Mandola and Gracie Schobel who finished with eight kills each. The offense stayed flowing due to the efforts of Sage Thomas who had one of her best assist totals of the season with 45 setter assists.
Vs Brenham, W, 3-0
September began with a sweep victory for the Lady Cards. Brenham provided quality competition in each set, but they could not take the advantage in any set as Columbus held on to take every game on the way to the sweep.
The Lady Cards had their biggest win in game one with a 25-17 victory. The second set was a much tighter affair as Columbus took a 25-22 win over their opponents. Columbus took a bigger advantage in the third and final game as they held on for a 25-20 victory to finish the match.
The Lady Cards got another quality defensive performance from Caylie Neisner as she led the team with 13 digs. Ally Tribe put up 10 digs and Sage Thomas had eight digs for the third-highest total on the team. Thomas also had 32 setter assists which helped Tribe reach 17 kills during the match. She also set up Gracie Schobel for eight kills.
