The Columbus Lady Cardinals defeated Rice 1-0 on Monday, Feb. 8.
Senior Nancy Hernandez scored the game’s only goal in the first half, with an assist from freshman Karina Rubio. Junior goalkeeper Lourdes Medina Baca had fourteen saves during the shutout.
“We played a very solid game and got a really big win. We got off to a rough start in district and really needed a win in the worst way. The girls showed up with a great effort against Rice. We’ve had to reschedule a lot of games and we’ll pretty much be playing them one right after another once this weather clears. It’s going to be a race to the finish.” says Coach Ross Macha.
Games Friday against Hempstead and Saturday against Royal were rescheduled due to the bad weather. Columbus will travel to Hempstead on March 3rd and will host Royal on Feb. 24. The Lady Cardinals will return to action on Friday when they play Royal on Friday, Feb. 19, and then play a rescheduled game against Navasota on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The Lady Cardinals improved their district record to 2-2.
