Ladycats ready for district play to begin

WEIMAR – The Weimar varsity volleyball team has done everything they can to prepare themselves for the upcoming district season after playing through some difficult matches in the tournament and non-district portion of the schedule. After coming out with a positive record, Weimar enters district play with the hopes of taking the top spot after gaining valuable experience throughout the first half of their season. They got their final tune-up for district after taking a three-game sweep against Fayetteville in a match that had its tight moments, but for the most part was dominated by the Ladycats.

Weimar had their most dominant set in the opening game as they relied on their potent offense to run out to an early lead and hold on for the victory. They were able to take advantage of a Fayetteville team that had some struggles getting started early and flooded the Lady Lions with plenty of attacks and strikes. At the same time, the Ladycats did not allow anything easy to score on their own side of the net as they had their best defensive effort of the match in the opening set. After a strong performance that stifled Fayetteville’s offense, Weimar went on to take game one by a 25-11 margin.

The next game was a much tighter affair as Fayetteville’s offense woke up a bit and tried to catch the Ladycats off guard with some quick strikes and accurate attacking. Weimar struggled somewhat to stop the Lady Lions as the teams had their closest set in the second. The score was close throughout as both teams leaned on their offensive attacks to try to create an advantage and take the all-important second set. While the defense for both teams left a little to be desired, Weimar held on to their focus and claimed a 25-23 victory to take the second-straight set and push Fayetteville to the brink of losing the match. It was the only set of the match that the Lady Lions would reach the 20-point threshold.

The final set was also relatively close as the offenses for both teams stayed effective. The Lady Lions tried to force a fourth game with a strong effort, trying to keep up with Weimar’s scoring as the Ladycats tried to secure the sweep. This time, Weimar’s defense stood up to the challenge of Fayetteville’s increased effort as they prevented the Lady Lions from reaching 20 points. After another strong performance, the Ladycats secured a 25-18 victory to claim the match and put an end to the non-district portion of their schedule.
