The Columbus Cardinals traveled to Yoakum for a conference game against the top 10 ranked Yoakum Bulldogs Friday, Oct 16.

The Cardinals muzzled the Bulldogs with a 35-14 win.

Coming into Friday night’s contest Yoakum had the number one defense in the district.

Cardinals are currently ranked ninth in the Dave Campbell’s Football Poll and third in the Padilla Poll.

Giving up a little over 300 yards per game, the Yoakum defense was trailed by the Cardinal defense in second place.

Columbus struck early in the first quarter with a 17-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Ty Thomas.

Senior running back Kion Hurd continued to show his dominance on the ground, rushing for a career-high of 207 yards on 22 carries and 2 touchdowns.

Thomas would find his speedy wideout Kaycon Wilson for a 31-yard touchdown reception, giving the Cardinals a 28-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Freshman running back No. 20 Tyvone Whitehead scored his first touchdown as a “ Big Cardinal “ with a 36-yard touchdown run.

Whitehead showed off his promise and speed as he put the icing on the cake, extending the Columbus upset to 35-14.

Offensively, the Cardinals rushed for a total of 304 yards and passed for 88 yards.

On defense, the Cards put pressure on the Bulldogs with a total of 256 yards in rushing.

Only three games remain in the season as the Cardinals continue to prove themselves time and again.
