Last saturday, five students from Rice ISD traveled to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas to compete in the Regional UIL Academic Competition; one of these students in particular managed to come out above the rest in her competition, advancing to the state level for the first time in years for Rice ISD.

Morgan Wilbern competed in the journalism event Copy Editing where she achieved first place despite competing against twenty five students from other prestigious schools. In the Copy Editing event, students are given fifteen minutes to offer corrections over a sample piece from a form of media like a newspaper article in order to improve upon it.

“I couldn’t help but cry tears of joy when I found out that I had placed first. This our first year having copy editing so I didn’t expect to make it to regionals, let alone qualify for state. I’m happy that I was able to make my school and family proud, and I’m hoping for a good outcome in May when I attend state in Austin” said Morgan Wilbern.

The State UIL Academics Competition will taking place at the University of Texas on May 2-4, where Morgan will compete against the best students in the state.
