St. Anthony recognizes National Catholic Schools Week
National Catholic Schools Week 2024 is happening the week of Jan. 28, and this year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.” Student teams comprised of all grades will participate in the week’s activities together with a teacher or staff member leading the way.

Columbus Education Foundation participates in Career Fair
Columbus Education Foundation, Inc., was part of the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Career Fair at CHS on Jan. 17. CEF volunteers engaged high school students in conversation to prompt thinking about career options whether they go on to higher education at college or attend trade school for services or technology.

Full candidate list for local elections
The county elections office has released the full list of positions up for election at the upcoming primaries. Several incumbents are up for reelection this cycle, and there are a few candidates that will be running unopposed. Below is a list of the positions up for election and the candidates vying for their respective positions. There are no democratic candidates for any local positions in Colorado County. A full voter’s guide with a description of each candidate will be available in the Citizen in the weeks preceding the election.

St. Anthony students explore Texas history
Members of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas exhibited their Pioneer Life Trunk to Ms. Kelsey Bohuslav’s 4th grade class at Saint Anthony Catholic School. Kathleen Townzen and Donna Pustejovsky from the Dilue Rose Harris chapter presented various replica items from the mid-1800s. These ‘artifacts’ would be used in everyday life, such as maps and currency, household items and toys and games. As each item was presented, students were able to handle, experiment, and enjoy. The class was excited to participate and afterward enjoyed afternoon snacks.

Columbus Elementary fourth-graders experience Texas history
The fourth graders at Columbus Elementary School welcomed members of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Kathleen Townzen and Donna Pustejovsky from the Dilue Rose Harris chapter presented a Pioneer Life Trunk filled with replicas of items from the republic of Texas era. They sprinkled in a little bit of Texas history while explaining the use of everyday items, household items to toys. Students compared the items to their modern-day counterparts. The class got to demonstrate, handle, and play with the items and relate to their own experiences.
