Rice 7 on 7 falls to Three Rivers to concede state tourney spot
GANADO – The Rice Consolidated 7 on 7 football team nearly claimed their place State Tournament later this month after competing against the Three Rivers Bulldogs and falling in a close game in the qualifying game. The Raiders nearly came away with victory and a place in the state tournament after just falling behind in a 19--16 defeat. Unfortunately for the Raiders, that tournament was their last shot at potentially reaching the state tournament as there are no more state-qualifying tournaments on the schedule. The Raiders have just one more tournament that will be hosted on their homefield as they get one final tune up before the conclusion of summer football prior to summer camps closer to the fall season. 06/14/2023 12:00 AM

SCHULENBURG – Colorado County received a little more state recognition for their two, playoff-qualifying lady hoops teams this past basketball season. The Columbus Lady Cards and the Weimar Ladycats were the two teams that represented Colorado County in the UIL State Playoffs and had strong seasons that ultimately allowed them to reach the postseason. A host of impact players contributed to each of these teams’ success as they competed in their playoff runs. The Lace ‘em Up All Star game gave the opportunity for these teams to once again be seen and recognized at a state level as a pair of lady hoopers from each team, Bailey Gustus and Treasure Upson for Columbus and Paige Pavlu and Kim Hinze for Weimar, attended and competed in the exhibition of some of the best talent in the state. The Lady Cards got some added familiarity on the team as their head and assistant coaches Mike Albers and Zach Albers led their All-Star teams as well. 06/07/2023 12:00 AM

The Cardinal’s varsity baseball team just completed a historical year for Columbus after reaching the Regional Semifinals just a few games away from reaching the state tournament. While their matchup against Saint Gertrudis did not go in their favor after Columbus pushed the series to a clinching third game, the Cards can come away from the season knowing a few positive takeaways from the season at large. For one, the Cards reached the regional semifinal round for the first time in 17 years. Secondly, after finishing the season with 27 wins, the Cards had their winningest season in program history. With several key departures from seniors after this season, the Cards will be hoping to find ways to continue the momentum next season. 05/31/2023 12:00 AM
