District Champion Columbus dominates in playoff first round
The Lady Cards’ varsity basketball team have known for a while that a few things were coming to them by the end of the season. The first, was a district title. They clinched first place in the district much sooner than their final game of the regular season last week, but they officially clinched an undefeated district season following their win against Palacios on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Lady Cards got the rest of the week and the weekend to prepare themselves for the second thing they knew had been coming: the playoffs. The Lady Cards travelled to Smithville to take on Nixon-Smiley in a game that was never very competitive as they ran out to a huge victory to claim their spot in the second round and surpass last year’s postseason run. 02/15/2023 12:00 AM

Cards finish as district runners up
The Columbus Cardinals’ varsity basketball team hung near the top of the district standings for basically the entire district season. They started with a huge win streak that had them holding the first-place spot in the standings. A victory earlier in the season against legitimate challenger, Edna, put the Cards in a position to potentially close out the season in first place. However, Columbus would go on to lose two games in a row to lose their hold on the district lead. Last week, the Cards held pace in the standings with a big win against Palacios that set up a rematch against Edna that would decide the district title. Edna’s offense exploded in the title game and clinched the district championship on their own home court. 02/15/2023 12:00 AM

Weimar fails to close out close games
The last week for the Weimar varsity boys’ basketball team came with some tight competition as the Wildcats finish off the final games of their season. The Wildcats played in back-to-back close games that each had a final margin of three or less on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for Weimar despite their solid efforts, they could not claim a win in either game as they fell by one possession to each opponent. The Wildcats left the week with just a 5-point combined margin of defeat. 02/08/2023 12:00 AM

The Weimar varsity lady hoops team entered the last few games of the season with a goal of finishing as high as possible in the district standings. With six district losses, they had already given up their claim on the district title before entering play last week. However, they got a big win against the team ahead of them in the standings during their two games played as they try to reach one of the district’s top spots and qualify for the postseason. 02/08/2023 12:00 AM

Mills’ solid week leads Lady Raiders despite losses
This season has been one focused on development for the Lady Raiders as they hope to build a winning program over time. While their development did not culminate into winning for Rice, they have allowed some of their young players to build confidence being on the court as the senior-less team battled through a strong district. Tatianna Mills is an upperclassman who seemed to have gotten stronger offensively as the season progressed. She has shown much improved output in their most recent games, scoring at least 15 points in each of their losses last week. The Lady Raiders will not have any postseason play to look forward to after their game against Industrial on Tuesday night, but they will be looking forward to trying to grow the program in future seasons. 02/08/2023 12:00 AM

Lady Cards stay undefeated in district after blowout wins
The Columbus Lady Cards’ basketball team is looking to wrap up their third-straight district title after securing a few more blowout victories in the late part of the season. The job is just about done as even if Columbus falls to Palacios Tuesday night in the final game of the season, they will still have the top district record. At this point the odds would likely be in Columbus’ favor as their offensive and defensive attacks are meshing together at the perfect time. The Lady Cards are hoping their recent success translates into the postseason as they aspire to have an improved playoff run after last year’s first-round departure. 02/08/2023 12:00 AM

Cards lose district’s top spot, keep pace in race
There’s no such thing as easy when it comes to winning a title race in sports. The Cards’ varsity basketball team is finding that out for themselves this season as one of the district’s top teams. After a dominating run to begin district play, they have started to get every team’s best shot as they recently completed a stretch of five straight games that finished with a single-possession final margin. Results have varied for the Cards as they went 3-2 during that stretch, sometimes showing great composure and hitting huge shots, other times just missing on a few key plays late. While the losses brought Columbus to second place behind Edna, the Cards actually started their tight, five-game stretch with a close win against the Cowboys. Columbus will have to find a win against Palacios Tuesday night, but if they complete that task, they set themselves up for a rematch on Edna’s home floor on Friday that will likely decide which of these two teams will claim the district title. 02/08/2023 12:00 AM

The Weimar Ladycats’ basketball team continued their up-anddown season with another split of two games last week against district opponents. They scored the same number of points in each game but had varying levels of success in preventing their opponents from scoring as they started their week with a loss against Flatonia and followed with a Friday win against Schulenburg. There was some extra history made on Friday night as well as this season’s leading scorer, Paige Pavlu, scored her 1000th career point as a member of the Weimar Ladycats. 02/01/2023 12:00 AM

The Weimar boys’ hoops team has had some struggles on the defensive end in their most recent games. Last week, their opponents scored a combined 138 points in two games as Weimar failed to slow down those respective offenses. On Monday, Jan. 30, the soccer teams for Columbus and Rice competed on Rice’s home field for a district matchup between the rival schools. Conditions were difficult as the cold and misty winds made sub-40 degree weather feel even colder. However, it was Columbus that claimed the advantage as both the girls and the boys claimed 3-0 victories over their county counterparts. 02/01/2023 12:00 AM

The Rice Lady Raiders’ varsity basketball team has been searching for ways to improve all season. While their improvements have not been consistent enough to translate into wins recently, they do show glimpses of effective play through stretches. Last week, they showed some of their inconsistency as they were undermined by a defense that allowed at least 59 points in both games. They also struggled offensively with just one double-digit scoring quarter in the week as they took back-to-back district defeats. 02/01/2023 12:00 AM

The Rice Raiders’ basketball team gave themselves opportunities to win in each of their games last week against district opponents. The Raiders were able to keep up with the scoring efforts of each team as they lost both games by less than six points. However, their defense halted any chance they had of climbing over the hump to secure victory in either game. 02/01/2023 12:00 AM
