The Raiders had a difficult game against one of the top teams in the district when they traveled to face the Yoakum Bulldogs on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Columbus Lady Cards have been having a strong year at this point of the season’s latter stages. At 21-4, Columbus is sitting comfortably at the top of the district standings and are hoping to potentially win out to complete the season. During Friday night’s trip to Rice Consolidated, the Lady Cards visited a team with much different expectations. The Lady Raiders have been focused on improving their fundamentals and skills, but their efforts have not translated to wins this season. They are 2-20 overall on the season and have yet to pick up their first district win. The matchup between the Lady Cards and the Lady Raiders was reflective of the position both teams find themselves in at this point as district-leading Columbus claimed a 66-24 victory over the last place Lady Raiders. 01/25/2023 12:00 AM

The Columbus varsity boys’ soccer team constantly created opportunities for themselves during Tuesday night’s Jan. 17 game against Smithville. By putting pressure on the box offensively, Columbus weakened the defense and even earned a penalty kick chance from their efforts. The Weimar Wildcats had chances near the end of their game against Ganado to potentially come out with a victory. They were able to score and defend at a relatively high level all game. Ladycats drop game against Ganado
The Weimar Ladycats had only one game this past week after having an off day on Friday. Despite the break, they may have been chomping at the bit to get back on the court to redeem themselves after dropping a close game against the Ganado Lady Indians. Weimar had a strong game and kept things close because of their defense which has been elite all season. The Texas Girls’ Coaches Association is a statewide press organization that covers, analyzes and ranks varsity girls’ sports in every division. Both the Columbus Lady Cardinals and the Weimar Ladycats spent time this past season on the TGCA top-25 poll as one of the top teams in the state. Because of their team performance this season, it is no surprise that there are a number of players from both teams who received honors for their play. Below are the TGCA All-State selections in Colorado County. Note: The All-State selections are separated by division and consolidated here for space. Rice has been having those same difficulties all district season as they have yet to get their first district win of the season. Swamp Strength 1.0 sets stage for strong season opener
The first powerlifting meet of the season came with significant success forth the Columbus Cardinals’ and Rice Raiders’ lift teams. The Rice-hosted ‘Swamp Strength 1.0’ marked the first of several competitions to be held this season at the school. Columbus’ lady soccer team has been finding a lot of success in the early season as they battled through another tournament last week. At nearby Rice High School, the Lady Cards fought through six close matches in consecutive days. Lady Cardinals hoops battle to unbeaten week
The Columbus varsity lady hoops team has not lost many games this season and has not lost in five tries since their two losses in a late-December tournament. In the five games since their last loss to Houston Christian, the Lady Cards have averaged over 55 points per game while holding their opponents to just under 34 points per game.
