Legal groups sue to stop new immigration law
The ink was barely dry on a law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott that makes unauthorized entry into the United States a state crime before a lawsuit was filed by civil rights groups and El Paso County challenging its constitutionality. The Austin American-Statesman reported the suit was filed in an Austin federal court by the ACLU and two immigrant advocacy groups on behalf of the county.

City manager discussion continues at Weimar Council
WEIMAR – The city government of Weimar has continued their search for a city manager to fill the position that has been vacant for just around six months. While there were several topics on the docket for the Council’s regular meeting on Dec. 14, many of the residents present were in attendance to witness the discussion surrounding the city manager position as well as the interview portion during executive session that was revealed and discussed openly during the subsequent public portion.

COLUMBUS – The final iteration of the year for Saturday on the Square had a bit of Christmas flavoring as the event featured an appearance by Santa. Santa took pictures at the square with the families and children present before taking a trip around Columbus with the assistance of the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department.

CEF Classroom Grant awarded to Audrey Dyer
Audrey Dyer, eighth-grade science teacher at Columbus Jr. High, will celebrate the new year with some “winnings” from the Columbus Education Foundation. Her application for a CEF Classroom Grant awards her $750.00 to purchase items on her “classroom dream list.” Her listed items provide new equipment to help students better engage in the learning experience. She is always looking for creative ways to enhance learning for her 120 science students, ages 13-14 years.

Deputy Santa event provides holiday cheer for county children
COLUMBUS – The Family and Youth Services organization and the Sheriff’s Office combined to host this year’s edition of ‘Deputy Santa’ at the fairgrounds for the youth of Colorado County on Sat. Dec 16. Children and families had access to food, games, Christmas themed decorations as well as the opportunity for pictures with Santa.

Nesbitt Memorial Library celebrates 75th anniversary
On March 2, 1948, the Mansfield Memorial Library was officially opened. Judge Joseph Jefferson Mansfield provided the land in partnership with the City of Columbus, to build a public library. Within a short time, Columbus had outgrown the building. In 1977, Miss Lee Nesbitt had the vision to purchase land and build a library across the street from Columbus Elementary School.
