COLUMBUS VOLLEYBALL TEAMS CHAMPIONS AT SUMMER TOURNEY
SCHULENBURG – All three of Columbus High School’s volleyball teams competed in their respective brackets in a summer tournament that allowed some of next year’s players to get an early start at building chemistry with their teammates. The varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams each showed a similar form of dominance that the varsity team has shown in recent seasons. Every team one their respective championships as the Lady Cards swept the competition with just a few weeks until they start regular season play again with their first non-district game of the year.

Patrick issues gag order ahead of trial
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick last week issued a sweeping gag order ahead of the impeachment trial of suspended Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Houston Chronicle reported, saying “out-of-court statements” by both sides threaten to jeopardize the trial.

Allen ‘Cotton’ Maurice Kahlden passed away July 16, 2023, in Columbus, Texas at the age of 92. He was born at home south of Columbus on June 1, 1931, to Werner and Mary Frers Kahlden. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1949.

Age to file for jury duty exemption changes
According to the Colorado County Elections Office, the H.B. 2015 has amended the Government Code to raise, from 70 to 75, the age at which a person qualifies for an exemption from jury service on the basis of age and the age at which a person may claim a permanent exemption from jury service.

Fitzgerald places top 10 at Texas FFA competitions
DALLAS – The Columbus FFA program had a quality showing in the FFA state speaking competitions at the Annual Texas FFA Convention. Alley Fitzgerald represented Columbus as she delivered a compelling performance in her two categories to take a top ten placement in each. She took an eighth-place finish in the Soil and Water Stewardship speaking competition for one of her top placements. Her other finish was an even higher-quality finish as she took a top three spot in Extemporaneous speaking. Fitzgerald took the bronze in that competition to round out her day and claim a medal for Columbus FFA.

Columbus cracks top 100 Texas football programs
The Dave Campbell’s Texas Football publication has been the eyes over Texas Football for decades, releasing content and analysis for football programs as small as the 1A division and even six-man teams. Part of their coverage includes several different rankings for the teams in each division as the season progresses. However, one poll spans the entirety of Texas, pitting football programs against each other regardless of size or division. One hundred teams are ranked by their general prestige and recent success during regular seasons as well as the UIL State Playoffs. The Columbus Cardinal football team has been as good as anybody the last few seasons, leading to the Cardinals finally breaking into the top 100 for the first time by taking the final spot on the list.

Weimar FFA recognized for state awards
DALLAS – The 95th annual Texas FFA Convention hosted Weimar FFA and hundreds of other schools as they recognized different state awards for the teams present. Weimar received plenty of recognition themselves with several of their members taking the highest honor the Texas FFA Association can bestow. They also had a few of their competitive teams receive some recognition for their performance as well in state competitions, receiving trophies and certificates to mark their achievements in their respective categories.

Weimar Vets fall to the Brewers
The Weimar Vets hosted the Austin County Brewers at Strickland Field on Sunday. The starting pitcher for the Brewers kept the Vets’ hitters in check for six shutout innings including five perfect innings while putting up eight runs themselves. The Vets cut the lead to 8-4, but the Brewers put the game away with five runs in the ninth for a final score of 13-6.
