Melvin Lee Otto, age 83, passed from his earthly home in Columbus, on June 5, 2025. He was born to Edmund and Alvina (Haas) Otto on Sept. 16, 1941, in Weimar.
Melvin Lee Otto, age 83, passed from his earthly home in Columbus, on June 5, 2025. He was born to Edmund and Alvina (Haas) Otto on Sept. 16, 1941, in Weimar. He spent time in his early years helping on the family farm when he was not in school. While in high school, he participated in sports and FFA. His first jobs included working for a local feed store and for Getschmann's Service Station.
After high school graduation from Weimar ISD, Melvin and his brother Marvin left home for basic training. Melvin was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood military base in Missouri, where he worked issuing supplies to new arrivals. Upon returning home, Melvin began working for the Texas highway department; his job there lasted for 31 years until he retired. After retiring, he did part-time work for Columbus Livestock.
Melvin was proud to be a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Weimar. He served as president of the council and Lutheran brotherhood. He was a Sunday school teacher and sponsor of the Luther League. Upon moving to Columbus, he became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 27 years Mary (Horndt) Otto of Columbus, sister Margaret Raabe of Weimar, and nieces Sherise (Glenn) Davis and Sharon (David) Jochen, along with his great-nephews Jared (Chantel) Davis, Jaston (Sarah) Davis, Jamison Davis, Colby Jochen and Caleb Jochen, three great-great nephews, two great-great nieces, and several cousins.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, brother Marvin, and brother-in-law David Raabe.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus.
Funeral service will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus, Texas on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Alan Kethan officiating. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. in the Weimar Masonic Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jamison Davis, Jaston Davis, Caleb Jochen, Colby Jochen, Darrell Kubesch, and Chad Kloesel. Honorary pallbearers include family members Glenn Davis, Jared Davis, David Jochen, Reuben Otto, Tommy Hadash and Wilfred Fuchs, long-time friends Hugo Richter and Bill Chesser, his Godchildren Tyler, Drayton, and Jordan Chesser, and all of his morning coffee friends with whom Melvin built great memories.
