LAWRENCE ALLEN BERGER

Lawrence was born on Aug. 11, 1931, to Henry Berger and Hilda (Gold) Berger in Weimar, Texas and grew up in Columbus, Texas. He attended Columbus Schools and joined the Armed Forces in 1952, where he served until November 1954 in Korea. On June 21, 1958, he married Mary Catherine Green in Garwood, Texas.
Lawrence joined the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department at age 18 and served there until 1958, when he joined the Garwood Volunteer Fire Department and volunteered for many years. He was an active member of the Lehrer Memorial Methodist Church and Lions Club of Garwood. Lawrence also volunteered as an escort for the Rice High School Band for many years.
Lawrence owned several different businesses during his lifetime as well as serving as Constable for Colorado County for 40 years. He was elected in 1971 for Constable of Prec. #2 and in 1972 became Constable of Prec. #1 where he remained Constable until his retirement in 2012.
In his free time, Lawrence enjoyed spending time hunting, going to the casino, raising cattle, and traveling. One of his favorite past times was playing dominos with his friends at the fire station in Garwood.
But more than anything, Lawrence loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, taking them on trips and spending time at deer camp.
Lawrence is survived by his children, Elizabeth Grissom and husband, Cullen, Jeffrey Berger and wife Karen, and grandchildren, Casey Matzke, David Grissom and wife, Lindsay, Jacob Berger and wife, Karli, Britni Milstead and husband, Kevin, Cortni Latham, and husband, Freddy, and Matthew Moody. He also has five great-grandchildren, Mattie Polasek, Leighton Grissom, Wyatt Hanley, Brayden Milstead, and Luke Latham as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Hilda Berger; wife, Catherine Berger; brother, Leon Berger, sister-in-law, Ruby Berger; and nephew, Billy Berger.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Texas. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Lehrer Memorial Methodist Church in Garwood, Texas, officiated by Pastor Debbie Lewis. Burial will take place in Lehrer Memorial Cemetery near Garwood, Texas.
Pallbearers are Jacob Berger, David Grissom, Mitchel Smith, Kenneth Danklefs, Mark Wied, and Bi lly Hefner. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Rees and Gary Kocurek.
