MARVIN FRANKLIN BENNETT, JR. JANUARY 18, 1947 – JANUARY 22, 2026
Marvin was born Jan. 18, 1947 in Damon, to Marvin, Sr and Lorine Bennett. The fami ly moved from Damon to New Ulm, and Marvin went to school in New Ulm, and then Columbus. After graduation, he joined the Navy during Vietnam where he became a Mines Man, stationed in Crete, Greece. After serving his country, he returned home to Texas and began his civilian life. He went to work at Cameron Iron Works, working his way up to shipping and receiving manager. After the oil crash in the 80’s, he found work in a couple of different areas until he found a job he loved at Stewart & Stevenson in Sealy, where he worked until he retired.
In 1971, he met Jodie Porter and after a couple of years of dating, they married on April 1, 1973, and stayed married until she passed away just short of 32 years of marriage. During those 32 years, they welcomed three kids, of which he adored and talked about with such pride throughout his life.
Later, Marvin’s youngest son was talking to a friend of his, whose mom was also a widow, and thought they would be a great match. Once introduced, Marvin and Vera hit it off and were inseparable. After being together for many years, they married in 2012 and remained in love until he passed.
Marvin had numerous passions throughout his life including hunting, fishing, telling great stories and making people laugh, but his greatest passion was spending time with his grandkids, and when he wasn’t spending time with them, he was definitely talking about them. If you ever wanted to know the pride he took in his grandkids, all you had to do was walk into his house and see his fridge covered with their pictures.
Marvin was proceeded in death by his parents, Marvin Sr. and Lorine Bennett, his first wife, Jodie, son-in-law Nicholas Erwin and twin grandsons Marvin and Brandon Shimek.
He was survived by his wife Vera, children Mardie (and wife Leslie), Wesley (and wife Sara), Josie Rodriguez, Monica Shimek (and husband Al len), Robyn Erwin, and Jakki Jordan (and husband Erric). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Alannah, Jaiden, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, John, Austin, Trista, Kamdyn, Jonathan, Justice, Mark, Emmy, Jalen, Brayden, Jolie and Adalyn. Finally, Marvin is survived by and thankful for his amazing family at the West End Baptist Church.
