BECKY CANTU

BECKY CANTU

Becky Cantu, 77, of Columbus, peacefully passed away on Jan. 29, 2026, in Austin, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born on Oct. 26, 1948, to Frank and Esther (Gonzales) in Pulido, Columbus, Texas. Becky graduated from St. Anthony’s Catholic School in 1962 and Bishop Forest High School in 1966. Becky fulfilled her promise to her parents and became her family’s first college graduate in 1968 from Wharton County Junior College and in 1971 with a degree in sociology from the University of Houston.

On Aug. 23, 1969, she married her loving and devoted husband, Max Cantu. Together, they created a family foundation of God, love, hard work, music, and laughter. Becky stated that she and her husband “had a blast raising” their boys. Her sons’ friends and her nephews knew they could rely on her to provide a safe space or take them to a rock concert in Houston. In either of those cases, she would respond with an enthusiastic yes. Max and Becky were dedicated parents present at all football and basketball games and track meets. This was a tradition she continued when her youngest son became a coach, and her grandsons began playing sports. Becky showed that being present for her sons, grandsons, and nephews was never an inconvenience.

Becky was known in the community to be rel iable, compassionate, and hardworking. She was a charter member of the Parent Teacher Organization at Columbus Elementary School and a strong fundraiser for the school district’s band and athletic booster clubs. Her hard work was recognized in 1999 by Alpha Iota Upsilon, Xi Chi Kappa, and Xi Phi chapters of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority when they named her the 1999 Woman of the Year.

Becky’s strength of caring for others stretched beyond caring for her family and community. As a professional, she worked as a social worker for over 30 years for Neighborhood Centers at Ripley House and Child Protective Services. She often spoke fondly of her coworkers, telling stories of how they supported each other and how their friendship was vital in caring for the most vulnerable children in Austin and Colorado County.

After retiring, Becky chose to continue working to bring fun and enjoyment to the elderly community as an activity’s coordinator. In this role, she uti lized her ski l ls of creativity, enthusiasm, and humor. She stated that working there made her feel young again. Becky also enjoyed her time in the kitchen at Cantus’ Restaurant. She and “the guys” would listen to Johnny Cash as they worked together.

She enjoyed baking, listening to Tejano music, chatting with friends and family, playing games with her grandsons, and watching movies. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She frequently contributed to church feasts in Columbus and Bloomington by donating her delicious baked goods.

Becky is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Max Cantu; sons Jeremy Cantu and his wife Karinna of Pflugerville, Texas and Mark Cantu and significant other Nicole Owers of Columbus, Texas; grandchildren Alejandro Cantu and Gael Cantu; and several loving members of her extended family.

Waiting to greet her in heaven are her parents Frank and Esther Pulido; sister Diana Dybala; and brothers Bobby Pulido and Johnny Pulido.
