In 1957, he moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University. He would then go on to attend Cornell University for graduate business school and then the University of Texas at Austin to receive his law degree. He started his business career at Republic Bank, and after a brief stint as a money manager, he found his calling as a business executive with Gulf United Corporation. John successfully participated in the acquisition and sale of numerous businesses and was also a board member of other successful business ventures.

One of John’s happiest moments was when he permanently returned to Columbus for retirement. He spent the last two decades of his life focused on philanthropy. He was very passionate about the Columbus and Weimar communities, dedicating time and contributing resources to upgrading the school systems and other community initiatives.

John is survived by the love of his life Elizabeth Shatto Massey. They started dating in the 7th grade and were married on June 3, 1961. After nearly 65 years of marriage, Elizabeth remained by his side until the very end residing in the same nursing home in Columbus. John is also survived by his three children and their spouses, and six grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Monday, May 11, 2026, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Henneke Funeral home in Columbus.

Following a private family service, John was laid to rest in the Weimar Masonic Cemetery.
