URISSIA DOROTHY WINN GREEN
URISSIA DOROTHY WINN GREEN

Urissia passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on May 10, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. She was born on March 7, 1931, in Columbus, Texas, to Eddie Richard Winn and Grace Odell Winn. She is survived by her son, Joe Lee Green, Jr., and his wife, Bernadette Green; her daughter, Glenda Hadnot, and her husband, Emerson Hadnot, Jr.; and her grandchildren, Ashley White of Kemah, Texas, and Erika Coleman of Virginia.
After the untimely death of her father when she was 9 years old, Urissia spent much of her childhood helping care for her siblings while her mother worked. She attended Columbus Colored Elementary and Middle School and graduated from Columbus Colored High School, where she benefited from a strong educational foundation. She later attended Huston Tillotson College, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in 1973, and received a master’s degree in education from Prairie View A&M University in August 1978.
Urissia was a woman of strength, intellect, and grace in the face of adversity. She was also a respected leader and a loyal friend who served in many leadership roles throughout her life.
After college, Urissia lived and worked in Columbus, where she met and married her former husband, Joe Lee Green Sr. She paused her studies to raise their children, Glenda and Joe Jr., and later resumed her education at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.
Urissia was a devoted wife and an active member of St. Paul UMC. Her faith was central to her life and gave her strength as she served in a variety of leadership roles. She was a deeply valued member of her church and the Columbus Hospital Auxiliary. She loved to travel and generously shared her passion for education and intellectual curiosity with her family. She also volunteered with Christian women’s organizations and remained lovingly involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and many friends. Through her creativity, intellect, and compassion, she made a lasting impact on both her family and the community, building a meaningful life of service through her work in education.
She treated everyone with kindness and respect. Her friends were many and came from every chapter of her life, and she cared deeply for each of them. Urissia loved her family steadfastly and unconditional ly. She was the best mother we could have known and will be deeply missed. She leaves us with countless treasured memories and a lasting example of how to live with love, strength, and grace.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Columbus Hospital and Baylor Scott & White Hospital for the kindness and compassion they showed Urissia. They also thank her private caregivers in Dallas, Texas, Tonia Cotton and Beverly Evans, who brought her comfort and peace in her final days and hours, as well as the many friends who offered support, prayers, and thoughtful care in recent weeks.
Urissia completed her education at Prairie View A&M University with a Master’s Degree. She was very proud as we are of that achievement. In lieu of flowers or donations to the family, please consider donating to a scholarship for a deserving graduate of Columbus High School. To assist others on their path to success the Green family is contributing to a Scholarship for Columbus graduates bound for Prairie View A&M in memory of Urissia.
