ROENSCH

ROENSCH

Sharon Kay Roensch, age 82, of the Bernardo Community, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Oct. 5. Born on Oct. 1, 1944, in Columbus, she was the daughter of William Nelson and Wilma (Meyer) Nelson.

On May 16, 1965, she married the love of her life, Calvin Roensch, at St. Roch’s Catholic Church in Mentz. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and service to others.

Sharon attended Bernardo School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1962, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and a Varsity Cheerleader. She later graduated from Southwestern Business School in Houston and worked for United Gas Pipeline to begin her professional career before embarking on a distinguished 45-year career as a legal secretary with the law firm of Hodges, Moore & Gates in Columbus. Throughout those years, she earned the respect and friendship of countless people throughout Colorado County.

A lifelong member of St. Roch’s Catholic Church, Sharon dedicated her life to serving her church, her family, and her community. She was a Charter Member of the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Columbus Garden Club, and an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas since 1966. She was a Charter Member of Court St. Roch No. 2328 of Mentz, serving as Regent four times, and later held numerous district and state leadership positions, including serving as State President of the Catholic Daughters of Texas.

Volunteerism was the foundation of Sharon’s life. Whether organizing church events, nursing home ministries, charitable projects, community fundraisers, family reunions, or civic activities, she freely shared her time, talents, and leadership with others.

Sharon possessed many gifts and passions. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, cross-stitching, crocheting, puzzles, journaling, and paint-bynumber artwork. Her love of cake decorating became a thirty-year endeavor, creating beautiful cakes for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays, and celebrations throughout the area.

Alongside Calvin, she enjoyed participating in chili, beans, and barbecue cook-offs, developing lifelong friendships and treasured memories. Together they also owned and operated Gross’s Store at IH-10 and FM 949, serving the Bernardo community for many years.

Her sewing talent began at an early age and grew into a lifelong passion. She made much of her family’s clothing, including her own wedding dress. Quilting became one of her greatest joys, and over more than fifty years she made or helped make over 300 quilts. Many became family treasures, while countless others were donated to churches, charitable organizations, raffles, and community fundraisers.

Family gatherings and reunions brought Sharon tremendous joy. She loved bringing people together and preserving family traditions. She also remained deeply connected to her classmates, helping organize reunions for the Columbus High School Class of 1962 and reunions of former Bernardo and Mentz School students.

Sports were another lifelong passion. From her days as a Varsity Cheerleader to supporting Little League baseball, Columbus High School athletics, the Houston Astros, and NASCAR, she rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on her favorite teams.

For those who knew Sharon best, nothing symbolized her more than her beloved cardinals. She often said that seeing a cardinal was a prayer for her. Through the years, cardinals became a reflection of her faith and a reminder of God’s presence in everyday life.

Above all, Sharon loved her family. She cherished every moment spent with her son, grandsons, great-granddaughter, siblings, extended family, and friends. Her life was one of faith, generosity, leadership, service, and love.

Sharon was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Calvin Roensch; her parents, William and Wilma Nelson; her brother, Gerion Nelson; her brothers- in-laws, Gus Strauss, Ernest Peikert, Leroy Wenske, and Ernest Roensch; and her sisters-in-laws, Jo Ann Nelson, Amelda Peikert, and Edna Wenske.

She is survived by her son Troy Roensch and wife Sandi; grandchildren Jackson Roensch and wife Krislyn, and Kaldon Roensch; great-grandchild Heidi Roensch; siblings Carolyn Foster and husband Lester, Kenneth Nelson and wife Bonnie, Marilyn Nelson, Murray Nelson, and Iris Sue Strauss; sisters-in-law Pauline Nelson, Florence Jurajda and husband Bill, and Peggy Roensch; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and many dear friends.
