The Columbus Cardinals baseball team traveled to Karnes City on Thursday, April 30, and Friday, May 1, to take on the Karnes City Badgers for the bi-district championship.

They played a three-game series that saw the Cards sweep Karnes City to win the bi-district championship.

Game 1: 4-0, W

In game one, the Cards picked up a shutout win over their opponents with a final score of 4-0. The Cards started the game off strong as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning to give themselves a 3-0 lead early.

The bats were hot in the top of the first inning as they led off with a single from Jayden Spaulding. Then Wyatt Tipton hit a triple to bring home a run, followed by a double from Brody Tribe which brought home another run.

The third run came from Tribe who stole home after a wild pitch to give the Cards a 3-0 lead. The final run of the game came after Weston Krpec who hit a double to drive in the final run.

Tipton was a big story in this game as he was on the bump for six of the seven innings they played. He gave up only two hits while striking out 11 batters, and it gave the Cards a ton of momentum going into game two.

Game 2: 10-0, W

Game one went the full seven innings, but in game two the Cards needed only five innings to secure the bi-district championship. The Cards were the home team in this game and were batting in the bottom of every inning.

Much like game one though, the Cards were able to get runs on the board in the first inning. After a ground out from Spaulding, Tipton and Tribe hit a single and a double respectively to get some runners on base.

Ty Wiggs then hit a single that brought both runners home to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. Then in the second inning the Cards extended their lead by two runs after a double from Tipton to drive in two runs.

The third inning saw the Cards score three runs to extend their lead once more. Jayden Spaulding hit an RBI single to make the score 5-0, but then his brother Jordan Spaulding hit a single to bring home two runs and give the Cards a 7-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Weston Krpec hit a single to bring home the lone run and make the score 8-0. The Cards scored two more runs in the fifth inning after Britton Wolters was hit by a pitch to bring home a run and then Tipton scored on a wild pitch to arrive at the final score of 10-0.

The Cards now set their sights on the area round of the playoffs where they will take on the Marion Bulldogs on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, looking to capture the area championship.

Britton Wolters recorded an RBI in Friday’s 10-0 win over Karnes City.

The Columbus Lady Cardinals are onto round three after capturing the area championship over Marion at Marion High School on Wednesday, April 29, and Friday, May 1.

They played in a three-game series, and they needed all three games to secure the championship.

In the first game, the Lady Cards played a very strong game on both sides of the ball. The Lady Cards opened the scoring in the top of the first inning where they scored three runs to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.

The runs were scored thanks to back-to-back doubles from Allie Cranek and Peyton Drozd to bring home two runs. Then Aggie Rodriguez hit a single to drive home the final run of the inning.

The Lady Cards then went scoreless until the fourth inning where they scored one more run thanks to a single from Kaylea Foster to make the score 4-0. In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Cards scored two more runs thanks to a double from Kaylea McCarthy and a single from Foster to make the score 6-0.

Then finally in the seventh, Presley Drozd hit a sacrifice fly ball to drive in a run to arrive at the final score of 7-0.

While the Lady Cards secured a victory in game one, game two presented a different set of challenges, and the Lady Cards ended up on the losing end of that game. In game two, the Lady Cards had a 4-2 lead going into the fifth inning, but Marion started to find a rhythm offensively.

They scored one run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth inning to arrive at the final score of 5-4. The Lady Cards learned a lot from the loss and came back even stronger in game three.

In game three, the Lady Cards came out swinging again and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Thanks to a single from Peyton Drozd and a double from Rodriguez to bring home two runs.

The Lady Cards extended their lead in the top of the third by scoring one run thanks to Peyton Drozd, who grounded out but still drove in a run. Then the Lady Cards final two runs came in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a home run from Presley Drozd to make the score 4-0.

Then McCarthy hit a single that drove in the Lady Cards’ fifth and final run and gave the Lady Cards a 5-0 lead. Marion started to come back in the seventh inning, but the Lady Cards limited them to only two runs to capture the area championship.

The Lady Cards now look ahead to their round three matchup against Bishop on Thursday, May 7, at Almo Heights High School in San Antonio at 7 p.m.

Kaylea Foster led the Lady Cards with two hits and two RBIs in the win over Marion on Wednesday, April 29.

The Rice Consolidated Raiders basketball team had a great season that saw them post a 19-13 overall record and a 7-7 district record.

This team made the playoffs and lost in the Bi-District round to Poth, but despite this they still earned some All-District Honors.

Six players from the Raiders team this season were named as part of the All-District team starting with an individual award. Jeremiah Grounds was named the Sixth Man of the Year this season.

Grounds was a great option off the bench for the Raiders this season because he was very productive. Whenever he touched the floor, he impacted the game either offensively or defensively and played a big role in the Raiders’ success this season.

The First All-District team saw three Raiders named, and they were Jireh Cobia, AJ Jenkins and Kordae Johnson. These three were a big part of the Raiders’ offense this season and were relied on heavily for their scoring touch.

Cobia and Johnson were a dynamic duo at the guard position as they moved the ball well and made a lot of plays. But they also knew how to drive to the basket and score easy lay-ups.

As for Jenkins, his paint presence is what sets him apart from the rest. He secured countless rebounds and second chance opportunities for the Raiders this season, and that helped him earn a spot on the First All-District team.

The Second All-District team saw two Raiders named, and they were Avan Woolridge and DJ Amos. These two were also relied on for scoring, but they made a big impact on defense, using their size, speed and smarts to thwart any scoring opportunity the opposition thought they had.

Woolridge also made a big impact on the rebounding category for the Raiders as his length in the paint led to many scoring chances for the Raiders this season.

The Raiders basketball season is officially over and now look ahead to next season where they hope to push even deeper into the playoffs.

Kordae Johnson was named to the First All-District team for the 2026 season.

The Columbus Cardinals picked up their eighth loss of the season after falling to Hallettsville this week.

The Cards lost the game with a score of 2-1 and all of the runs were scored in the sixth and seventh inning.

The first five innings of this game were scoreless as the Cards searched for offense to open the scoring. But all eyes were on the defense in this game, and the Cards played some very stout defense.

They were led by Wyatt Tipton who pitched 6.2 innings, giving up only two runs on nine hits while striking out seven batters. He was relieved by Ty Wiggs who secured the final out of the game.

As for the scoring plays, in the top of the sixth inning Ryan Carter was the leadoff batter and he was walked to get a runner on base. Then a sacrifice bunt and a ground out followed, and Carter found himself on third base staring at home plate.

Then a wild pitch presented opportunity for Carter, and he stole home to give the Cards a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Hallettsville responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up.

Then Hallettsville held the Cards to no runs in the seventh inning, and they scored once more in the bottom of the seventh inning to arrive at the final score of 2-1.

The Cards now look ahead to their next game against the Rice Consolidated Raiders on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m.

Shiner finished with a total of 376 strokes to put into perspective how close this match was.

The Wildcats were led by Collin Morrison who not only came in 2nd place but actually had to win a playoff to earn it. He finished with 86 strokes shooting 43 on both the front and back nine to come up big for the Wildcats.

Next was Trey Billeck who shot a total of 87 strokes to almost mirror Morrison’s performance. They finished 2t6 strokes behind first place Shiner, who shot a 450.

The Ladycats played on their home course, but they still faced a few challenges along the way that boosted their score up and put them in second place. Despite this, the Ladycats still had a great round, so let’s look at what happened.

Leading the way was Kendall Jahn and Rylee Noska who each shot a 115 to finish in 4th and 5th place as individuals. They were each just two strokes away from coming in third place as an individual but regardless these ladies scores helped the team capture a silver medal.

Next was Chloe Brandt who shot a 122 she a really strong front nine shooting a 58 but then the back nine was a little but tougher as she finished with a 64. Next was Harley Thornhill who was the opposite of Brandt.

Thornhill shot a 63 on the front nine but then came storming back on the back nine to shoot a 61 and shave two strokes off her score to arrive at a 124 final stroke total. Then last but certainly not least was Aubree Breska, Breska finished with a 136-stroke total and like Thornhill, she took two strokes off her game on the back nine. She shot a 69 on the front and then a 67 on the back nine to arrive at 136 stroke total and keep her team in the running for second place in the district.

The Ladycats now look ahead to their next round, which will be the Regional Round, and they will look to improve their scores even more.

Kendall Juhn (left), Chloe Brandt, Rylee Noska, Harley Thornhill and Aubree Breska show off their silver medals.

The Columbus Cardinals baseball team picked up their eighth win of the season to improve to an 8-7 record in 2026.

The Cards defeated the Palacios Sharks this past Tuesday night with a score of 8-3, so let’s look at what happened.

The Cards were the road team in this game, so they were batting first, and they took advantage of the opportunity. The Cards were led off with a single from Ryan Carter which was followed by a pop fly from Jayden Spaulding which was caught for the first out.

Brody Tribe was then walked and that brought up Britton Wolters who hit a line drive into left field. He ended up on second base for a double that brought home two runs to give the Cards an early lead.

The Weston Krpec hit a single that brought home another run for the Cards. This gave them a 3-0 lead going into the second inning.

After keeping the Sharks off the board in the bottom of the first inning, the Cards went back to work on offense. Parker Meyer got the party started with a leadoff double, but it was followed by two outs from the Sharks.

Spaulding was then walked, which brought Brody Tribe up to the plate. He then smacked a ball deep into right field for a double which scored a run for the Cards.

Wolters then stepped up to the plate and hit a single which brought Tribe home to give the Cards a 6-0 lead. Colby Mathis was pinch running for Wolters, and he was able to score on a wild pitch to give the Cards a 7-0 lead.

Wyatt Tipton was then walked, but Palacios got the third out before Tipton could do any damage on the bases. The Sharks then broke through the Cards defense and scored one run on the bottom of the second inning to make the score 7-1 going into the third inning.

The Cards gave up two more runs to the Sharks in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 7-3. But the Cards responded in the seventh inning scoring one more run as Cade Neumann was able to make it back to home plate for the final run of the game.

The cards now look ahead to their next game against Hallettsville on Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m.

Citizen | Evan Hale Weston Krpec hit a single to drive home a run early in the game against Palacios.
