Auction proceeds directed to the Save Our Opera House capital campaign

The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust (CHPT) is proud to launch its Community Roots Online Auction, running Wednesday, April 29, through Sunday, May 3. All proceeds will benefit CHPT’s Save Our Opera House capital campaign, supporting the continued repair and restoration of the beloved landmark so it can serve Columbus for another 140 years.

Every great community is built on strong roots – shared history, familiar faces, and the kind of neighbors who show up when it matters. This spring, CHPT is celebrating exactly that. The Community Roots auction serves as the official kickoff to CHPT’s 140th anniversary celebration of the 1886 Stafford Opera House, and it’s an opportunity for the Columbus community to come together, share what makes this place special, and help preserve it for generations to come.

“As we begin to celebrate 140 years of the 1886 Stafford Opera House, the Community Roots auction feels especially significant. These auctions have become an important part of sustaining our preservation work, and we’re thankful for the continued enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” said Julie Prause, Board President.

This year’s auction will feature 40+ items donated by generous local businesses and community members, including unique dining experiences, tasty homemade treats, gardening supplies, kitchen essentials, and access to fun activities in and around Columbus. Because all items have been donated, 100% of the auction proceeds will fund preservation efforts of the Opera House. Bidding opens at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, and closes at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. Browse the full catalog at https://bit. ly/2026CHPTauction.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the many local businesses and supporters who donated such fantastic items to this year’s Community Roots auction. There is truly something for everyone, and it’s a fun and meaningful way for the community to support our mission…just in time for Mother’s Day and upcoming graduation, too,” said Doris Klaus, Auction Chair.

To participate, bidders can create a free account on the auction site and sign up for email notifications to track new listings and outbid alerts. There is no cost to register or browse the catalog – just a chance to find something you love while supporting one of Columbus’s most treasured historic landmarks.

“The success of these community-based auctions is a wonderful reflection of how deeply our community values the 1886 Stafford Opera House and CHPT’s work in preservation and tourism. Every bid helps ensure these historic treasures continue to serve Columbus for generations to come. There is something for everyone, and we encourage you to take a look!” said Leslie Kinnear, Executive Director.

Columbus Historical Preservation Trust (CHPT) is dedicated to the preservation of the history and culture of Columbus, Texas. The organization hosts fundraisers and community events throughout the year to educate the public, enhance understanding of Columbus’s history, and encourage tourism. CHPT owns and maintains four historic properties in town, including the 1886 Stafford Opera House, the Alley Log Cabin and Antique Tool Museum, the Dilue Rose Harris House Museum, and the Santa Claus Museum.

More information about CHPT: www.columbushpt. org Community Roots Online Auction cata log: https://bit. ly/2026CHPTauction.

Get ready for the garden club’s upcoming plant sale at Brookshire Bros. in Columbus this coming Saturday, April 25 beginning at 8 a.m. until around noon. These club members are holding just a few of the plants that will be available.

From past sales the community knows to expect plants grown by garden club members….plants that are really not found in nurseries. But there will be other plants that gardeners want because they are the foundation of color for the Spring and Summer plantings. And there will be some shade trees, too.

Also to be found at the sale will be baked goods such as cakes, pies, cookies and frozen casseroles. There will also be yard art. The garden club cart will again be filled with gardening supplies, and some very lucky person will win it in a drawing. Proceeds from the garden cart drawing will go to the club’s scholarship program that benefits local high school students.

Come be with other garden enthusiasts and exchange information about gardening.

The Columbus Garden Club plant sale will be held Saturday, April 25 at Brookshire Bros in Columbus.

Columbus Trash Off Days closed Saturday with the City of Columbus and local volunteers demonstrating a strong commitment to a clean and more beautiful community.

The city of Columbus has supported Trash Off Days since 2007 by providing Large Item Disposal for Columbus citizens at the City Maintenance Yard. The city ensures proper disposal of items brought in by residents by working with Texas Disposal Systems.

The city of Columbus will continue helping residents by providing free limb chipping service this week, April 13 – 17. Citizens must call City Hall at 979-732-2366 in advance to schedule chipping. All limbs should be placed at the curb (not in the street), away from meters, utility access holes, and drainage areas. Limb chipping is available for “do-it-yourself” homeowner trimming projects. It is not available for professional tree trimming projects.

Local volunteers joined Columbus Trash Off Days by beautifying public gardens, picking up litter in area parks, and along highways. Columbus Trash Off Days are part of the statewide Keep Texas Beautiful “Don’t Mess with Texas” clean-up campaign and the Great American Clean Up. This year “The Greatest American Clean Up” is celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary. Spring beautification activities continue until May 31st. You can still join Keep Columbus Beautiful’s Spring Clean Up. Call/Text 979-7334343 for details, or to report your volunteer work. Keep Columbus Beautiful is a project of Columbus Garden Club.

Standing with the Columbus Trash Off sign are, from left, Claudia Stephens, Gloria Stephens, Curtis Schonenberg and Rhonda Schonenberg.

This April, the Friends of the Weimar Public Library celebrates its fifth anniversary of National Poetry Month, welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with poetry in meaningful ways through a free program, featuring readings, snacks, conversation, and relaxation.

Scheduled for Thursday, April 23, the 5th Annual Open Mic Poetry Night will take place at the Weimar Gazebo located next to the library at 1 Jackson Square at 6:30 p.m. Come to read, listen, converse with neighbors, and enjoy a beautiful spring evening in this quiet outdoor setting. Bring your poems, family and friends, blanket or lawn chairs.

Members of Friends of the Weimar Public Library will furnish snacks and drinks.

Weimar’s Open Mic Poetry Night first launched in 2022 and has become an annual literary celebration for our community. It has created opportunities for children, young adults, parents, and seniors to read, share, and experience poetry, affirming poetry’s place as a vital part of our culture.

Throughout April, communities and community libraries and schools across the nation will offer a range of free programs, resources, and vevents designed to make poetry accessible to everyone in celebration of this national event. Attendees to our Weimar event can participate as readers, reading their favorite poet’s work or their own original poems; as an audience to the presenters; or as supporters of our library, enjoying the camaraderie of neighbors and friends.

Over the years, National Poetry Month has become the largest literary celebration in the world. Friends of the Weimar Public Library is proud to participate in this event. Poets who wish can have original poetry entered into an Anthology of poetry read at the yearly event by emailing the poem(s) with name and phone number to library@weimartx.gov.

As we approach the upcoming local elections, it’s the perfect time to reflect on why your vote truly matters. Colorado County will hold three elections on Saturday, May 2.

• Residents of Rice Consolidated ISD will elect a school board member.

• Registered voters within the city limits of Eagle Lake and Weimar will elect city council members.

Local elections deserve just as much attention as state and federal elections. The decisions made by school boards and city councils directly affect your daily life, your family, and your community.

Why are local elections important?

Local officials shape policies and decisions that influence:

• School procedures, funding, and staffing

• City budgets, ordinances, utilities, and essential services These positions are unpaid, filled by individuals who genuinely want to serve their communities.

Countywide voting on Election Day On Saturday, May 2, Colorado County will offer countywide voting, meaning you can cast your ballot at any of the five polling locations. No assigned polling place required.

Local elections often see lower turnout, yet they require the same resources as larger elections. Because all elections are 100% funded locally by your tax dollars, low turnout results in a much higher cost per ballot. Vote Centers are being used to make voting more convenient and accessible for everyone.

Early Voting Information

Early Voting will be available at three locations: Columbus, Weimar, and Eagle Lake

• Early Voting starts on Monday, April 20 and runs through Tuesday, April 28 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a few exceptions:

• Sunday, April 26: Early voting opens 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Tuesday, April 21: No early voting (state holiday) Plan ahead so you don’t miss your opportunity.

Sample Ballots

Sample ballots are available at:

• Weimar City Hall

• Eagle Lake City Hall

• RCISD Superintendent’s Office

• Colorado County Annex • Colorado County Election Center

• City websites

• Colorado County Elections page: https://www.co.colorado. tx.us/page/colorado. Elections No excuses — you have options.

You have nine days to vote, with hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., plus the flexibility to vote at any Election Day location or any early voting site.

Local elections are for you, your family, and your community. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

Your vote counts. Make it matter.

KREISCHE BREWERY-MONUMENT HILL

LA GRANGE — “Oh boy, did we hunt Easter Eggs up there,” longtime La Grange resident Verna Reichert recalled of childhood visits to the Bluff. Continuing this cherished tradition, Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host their annual Easter on the Bluff on Saturday, April 4th from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature children’s egg hunts on the grounds, living history demonstrations, and games. All are invited to take part in the longstanding tradition of celebrating Easter atop the Bluff overlooking La Grange.

Community gatherings have a long history on the Bluff. Beginning in the 1880s, the Bluff Schuetzenverein, a German marksmanship and social club, held feasts, dances, and holiday celebrations through the 1920s. Townsfolk, like Reichert, fondly remembered the brightly dyed eggs scattered across the grounds of Monument Hill on Easter morning.

This year’s Easter on the Bluff offers something for everyone. The sites’ monthly History in Play program will kick off the event from 2:00-4:00pm with Easter egg-themed games and activities.

At the Kreische house, costumed interpreters will demonstrate the historic smokehouse and 19th-century cooking. Before the egg hunts, visitors are encouraged to bring picnic meals and enjoy the scenic grounds.

Two egg hunts will be offered. The first, at 5:30pm, will take place inside the Kreische House yard and is intended for children aged 4 and under. The second hunt, at 6:00pm, will take place throughout the grounds for children aged 5-12. Because eggs are found quickly, families are encouraged to arrive early and prepare in advance.

Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase Early Bird tickets for Bluff SchuetzenFest, the sites’ annual beer and heritage festival on Saturday, May 16th. Discounted General Admission tickets and Beer Tasting Packages will be available, and lucky egg-hunters may even find coupons for free General Admission hidden in select eggs.

Admission for Easter on the Bluff is free for Friends members and children under 5, $2 for students, $3 for seniors, and $5 for adults. For more information, please contact the sites Visitors Center at (979) 9685658 or check out the sites’ Facebook page.

Young visitors race to find eggs hidden throughout the grounds. Easter on the Bluff features two egg hunts. The first is at 5:30 in the yard of the Kreische House for children ages 4 and under. The second is at 6 p.m. for ages 5-12 and will take place across the grounds. Courtesy photo

Colorado County Habitat for Humanity (CCHFH) will celebrate 30 years of serving families in the community with its first-ever 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, March 28, in Columbus. The family-friendly event will bring together community members, local businesses, and supporters to raise funds for Habitat’s New Home Build Program and Critical Home Repair Program for senior citizens.

The event will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at 1210 Travis Street in Columbus, and participants of all ages and fitness levels are invited to run, walk, or simply come out to support the cause.

Race proceeds from the event will directly benefit Habitat’s Critical Home Repair Program, which helps elderly homeowners remain safe and independent in their homes by addressing urgent needs such as roof repairs, wheelchair accessible showers, flooring, and other essential repairs.

Since 1996, CCHFH has built 31 new homes and is currently finishing home #32 while also remodeling another home. In its first 10 years, CCHFH built four homes. In 2006, a generous grant allowed CCHFH to expand its efforts with a goal of building two new homes each year, depending on the availability of volunteers and donations.

Since 2023, Colorado County Habitat for Humanity has invested $260,000 in critical home repairs, helping 34 families and 85 individuals across the county. The majority of these households are senior-led families living on fixed incomes, who often cannot afford the repairs needed to keep their homes safe.

“The Wellness Council is excited to sponsor this event. We support organizations that improve the health and well-being of our community, and Habitat’s work—building homes and providing repairs for seniors— addresses one of the most basic human needs. The Run/Walk also offers a wonderful opportunity for individuals and groups to exercise outdoors at their own pace. It is the perfect way to kick off the 2nd Annual Health & Wellness Fair on the Square, Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.,” said Tracy Lilie, Health Fair Chair.

Through the generous sponsorship of Cadence Bank—now part of Huntington Bank—and the Wellness Council of the Greater Colorado Valley, free race entries will be provided to first responders and teachers as a thank you for their service to the community.

“Cadence Bank, now part of Huntington Bank, is committed to supporting our community partners as we work together to create economic resilience and financial mobility for families across our footprint,” said Corey O’Brien, Assistant Branch Manager at Cadence Bank in Columbus, Texas. “By supporting Habitat, our philanthropic efforts promote affordable housing, community development, and homeownership.”

Participants who registered before March 16 will be guaranteed an event T-shirt, and runners and walkers can also enjoy swag bags and a fun, welcoming atmosphere for families and supporters.

“This event is a celebration of 30 years of neighbors helping neighbors,” said Kenneth Wicks, Habitat board member in charge of the Repairs Program. “By participating, supporters are helping ensure that working families can stay and thrive in our communities, while our senior neighbors can remain safe, independent, and comfortable in the homes they love.”

To register for the race, become a sponsor, or learn more about Habitat’s work in Colorado County, visit www.habitatcoloradocounty. org.

Through the generous sponsorship of Cadence Bank—now part of Huntington Bank—free race entries will be provided to first responders and teachers as a thank you for their service to the community.
