Houston Police Sergeant Paul Steven Weido, 51, was unexpectedly called home to be with the Lord on Dec. 11, 2018. He was born June 17, 1967, in Houston, Texas, to Sam and Harlean Weido, the youngest of seven children. Paul grew up in Houston until his junior year of high school at which time he moved to Columbus where he continued to live until his death.

COLUMBUS - Columbus Independent School District has three locations under consideration for a potential new softball field, district trustees were told Monday night during their regular meeting.
Three individuals were killed in two motor vehicle accidents in the county last week. Mackenzie Elizabeth Wiese, 16, and Lauren Nicole Wiese, 15, daughters of David and Sheryl Wiese of Eagle Lake, were killed Friday, Aug. 17 on FM 1093 on their way to band practice at Rice High School. According to the Texas Department of Safety report, Mackenzie Wiese was driving a 2010 Dodge Avenger westbound on FM 1093 when she ran off the roadway and overcorrected to the left. She began skidding to the right, crossing the center stripe into the eastbound lane where she struck a 2001 Chevrolet 3500 driven by Ramiro Ramirez Ferretiz, 37, of Weimar. Both Mackenzie and Lauren Wiese died at the scene. Ferretiz was transported to Columbus Community Hospital. All three were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. A scholarship fund has been set up in Mackenzie and Lauren’s memory at First National Bank in Eagle Lake. Anyone wishing to donate can drop off donations at any First National Bank branch in the area or mail donations to 100 Commerce St., Eagle Lake 77434. DPS Trooper Troy Clark investigated the accident and was assisted at the scene by troopers Mark Contreras and Cole Courville as well as Colorado County EMS, Eagle Lake Police Department, Eagle Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office. In an unrelated accident, Alexander Gossman, 63, of Acworth, Ga. was killed near the 700 mile marker of Interstate 10 Aug. 15. Gossman was driving a 2012 Toyota vehicle westbound on Interstate 10 at 11:25 p.m. when he crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer driven by Jose Ricardo Sifuentes of Dallas. Sifuentes was traveling on the improved shoulder due to a vehicle malfunction when Gossman struck his trailer. Gossman was pronounced dead at the scene by Colorado County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Chris Maddox. He was wearing a seatbelt. DPS Trooper Colby Havel investigated the accident and was assisted by DPS Sgt. Gary Chandler, troopers Julius Waffer and Klent Tipton as well as the Colorado County Sheriff’s office.
