The Columbus Cardinals won two very important district games last week against Yoakum and Edna.

The two wins improved their district record to 5-0 and strengthened their grip on the top spot in the district standings.

@ Yoakum, W, 5-0

The Cardinals started their athletic week on a baseball diamond away from home on Tuesday, March 19. They traveled to Yoakum for their fourth district game of the season.

Coming off back-to-back district wins the Cardinals were flying high confidence-wise. They came into Yoakum with some swagger and showed why they are a top team I the district.

Starting the game on offense the Cardinals wasted no time opening the scoring int he first inning. Leading 1-0, the Cardinals defense made quick work of Yoakum’s offense and finished out the first inning.

Heading into the second, it was more of the same from the Cardinals’ offense, continued to perform well, as they added three more runs to their lead. Leading 40t going into the bottom of the second, it was Kaleb Kuhn’s turn again to shut down the opposing offense.

Kuhn knew his role and played it well, striking out 11 batters. Kuhn frustrated Yoakum’s offense but they were a determined team. Yoakum also tightened up defensively at this point in the game looking for something to help spark their offense to get back in the game.

Kuhn stayed consistent all game long though and Yoakum could not find any luck on the offensive side. The Cards added one more run in the seventh inning to make the score 5-0 where they ended the game with three outs shortly after.

Vs. Edna, W, 11-0

In game two of two on their schedule last week the Cardinals’ offense stayed red hot posting 11 runs in their win over Edna on Friday, March 22, on their home field.

Offensively the Cards were led by Britton Wolters who had the only home run in Friday’s game. Wolters also recorded a double along with Trevor Berger while Brody Tribe contributed two doubles to the winning effort.

This game allowed for an opportunity to show just how deep the Cardinals are at the pitching position though. Kuhn has been putting up some crazy numbers this season, but the Cards have another guy doing the same thing just a little more under the radar.

James Janek took responsibility for the mound on Friday night pitching all six innings. Janek only allowed two hits, had zero walks and zero errors and recorded nine strikeouts.

Janek 72 pitches total on Friday night and 52 of them were strikes, meaning 71% of the time he threw a pitch on Friday it was a strike.

The Cards defended home field well because of this and sent Edna home with a loss in hand.

The Cards now have their eyes set on their game against Rice Consolidated on Tuesday, March 26, on the road in Rice with the opening pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
