Ash Wednesday, Lent begin for St. Anthony
Today, Wednesday, Feb. 14, is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lenten season. St. Anthony students perform Mass this morning at 8:15 a.m. During Lent, students will pray the Stations of the Cross weekly, and will attend Adoration on Wednesdays.

Garwood Elementary celebrates 100th day with kindness
GARWOOD – The school year has reached its latter stages after students at Colorado County schools have surpassed the 100th day of classes. Each school celebrated the mark differently, but the students at Garwood Elementary were challenged to show some kindness with charitable donations.

Hazard Mitigation Plan to be discussed
COLUMBUS – The Office of Emergency management will begin seeking feedback during the public opinion phase of the Hazard Mitigation Plan construction period. After seeking called in and written responses from county residents, the OEM will host a public meeting for residents to learn more about the current plan and to provide feedback.

Columbus American Legion gifts scholarships after competition
The American Legion hosted an Oratorical Competition for Columbus ISD students to potentially earn scholarships for schooling after graduation. Columbus High School senior Alley Fitzgerald competed and was awarded a $500 scholarship by Columbus Post 383 Adjutant Herb Fish.

Extreme environmental conditions make Texas trees susceptible to secondary stressors
COLLEGE STATION – With three consecutive years of severe weather conditions throughout Texas, including extended hard freezes and droughts, East Texas trees have become vulnerable to secondary threats. These threats include cedar bark beetles, Ips engraver beetles, Hypoxylon Canker disease and cedar rust fungi.
