Hazard Mitigation Planning gets public input
COLUMBUS – The County Office of Emergency Management is working through the process of creating and reviewing the county’s official Hazard Mitigation Plan to help the county prepare for potential risks and apply for natural disaster grants or similar funds. On March 7, the Langford Community Management Service held a public meeting where residents could come and express concerns and point out hot spot areas for hazards.

Celebrating an open government during ‘Sunshine Week’
In the Bill of Rights, there are certain freedoms guaranteed to U.S. citizens to protect from potential oppressive opposition by the government to stop it. This week from March 10 to March 16, the nation is celebrating the First Amendment and the merits of an open and transparent government. Specifically, the Freedom of Information Act of 1967 has gone a long way into keeping government transparent at every level from local school boards to the U.S. Congress.

Council denies extra street closing for Magnolia Days
COLUMBUS – The City Council heard concerns for safety regarding a request for an extra street closure than usual for the Magnolia Days Festival in May. Despite sharing those concerns with the presenters, the Council moved to deny the request along with other actions at the March 11 regular meeting.
