Coinciding with National Preparedness Month, this month is a time to encourage Texans to develop and practice emergency plans to protect their household and property in the event of an emergency or natural disaster by creating a communication strategy, deciding on an emergency meeting location, building a three-day disaster preparedness kit, and signing up for emergency alerts. “Each September, the State of Texas participates in National Preparedness Month and renews our commitment to promoting emergency preparedness in homes, businesses, and communities across the Lone Star State,” reads the Governor’s proclamation. “At this time, I encourage all Texans to remain mindful of both natural and manmade disasters. As the conditions of potential threats can change rapidly, it is essential to understand and heed warnings from local officials and emergency management personnel. In order to ensure a better and brighter future for the state of Texas, we must prepare today for a safer tomorrow.”

Read moreEditor’s Note: In an Aug. 18 article by John Jones that appeared in the Colorado County Citizen titled “Grant request narrowly passes,” the following was written: “Councilman Cummings had a different view on the request for the golf course to make a grant request from TPWD. He was not pleased that Bobbie Gustus was part of the Golf Course Committee seeking the grant. His disdain was that Gustus was part of a group that staged an assault on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Cummings says, “I don’t want to support a traitor to the U.S. Constitution.” This passage leads the reader to assume Gustus was part of a group that staged an assault on the US Capitol Jan. 6. Gustus has stated she was at the protest in Washington DC on Jan. 6, but stated she did not take part in any illegal activities. Furthermore, the statement from Alderman Keith Cummings was as follows: “She’s one of those who went to Washington Jan. 6, so I think we shouldn’t do anything involving her. I’ve seen the videos. Well, I’m only one vote. I would’ve voted for it but she’s a traitor to the United States Constitution.”
