An Eagle Scout at 16, Lorell continued his leadership throughout life. Born in Tennessee, he attended Vanderbilt University and studied civil engineering. He had a family business called Memphis Concrete Silo Company. In 1955, he founded Texas Concrete Silo Company in Eagle Lake, a successful company for many years.

The ship had suffered the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. It was the leadship in a class of 7 heavy cruisers in the war. It was among the 4 most decorated ships in WWII.
