Delbert “Butch” Hegemeyer, 71, of New Ulm, passed away Feb. 5 in College Station.

He was born May 9, 1950 to Reinhardt William Hegemeyer and Wilma (Gross) Hegemeyer in Welcome. On Sept. 3, 2010 he married Sheryl K. Machinsky.

Butch worked as a carpenter for many years. He was a perfectionist at his construction work. He attended schools in Welcome, Chappell Hill and Industry.

Butch was a horse lover and started riding Salt Grass Trailrides at the age of 17. He loved the camaraderie with family and lifetime friends that shared his passion with horses, mules and wagons. He enjoyed the yearly commitment to the associations and the rides they participated in on an annual basis. Lifelong friendships were created along the way with the Longneck Riders, Chappell Hill Cowpokes, and TTRA (San Antonio). He wouldn’t pass up the chance to enjoy the Fourth of July Ride, fair rides and parades and Sunday rides.

Butch loved watching his grandkids rodeo, showing and sporting events. He never missed a chance in sharing a funny joke or saying just what was on his mind. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart.

Butch is survived by his wife Sheryl Hegemeyer; daughters Laurie Loya and husband Doc of Waller, Rhonda Spies and Mark Cegielski of Chappell Hill, Brandy Mueller and husband Matt of Paige; stepsons Justin Vincent and wife Emily of Brenham, Keegan Vincent of Bellville; sister-in-law Diane Schulze and Jason; brother-in-law Dwayne Machinsky; grandchildren Morgan Helmcamp and husband Riley, Jarron Fajkus, Rhealee Spies, Pierson Spies, Rafe Loya, Remi Loya, Mattie Mueller, Millie Mueller, Emery Vincent, Jacob Vincent; sisters Eilene McFerrin, Lou Mae Neumann, Carol Wied, Sharon Richter; brothers Melvin Hegemeyer, Henry Hegemeyer, Bobby Hegemeyer; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Reinhardt Hegemeyer and Wilma Hegemeyer; sister LaVerne Watson; brother Delton Hegemeyer; an infant sister; father-in-law Herbert Machinsky.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus.

Funeral service will be Thursday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at Henneke Funeral Home. Pastor Scott Cigich will be officiating.

Burial will take place in Star Hill Cemetery near Industry.

Pallbearers are Delphine Merkel, Jason Schulze, Matt Mueller, Keegan Vincent, Gary Ladwig, Gary Shupak, Scottie Schubert and Terry Shupak. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren, Chappell Hill Cowpokes and Longneck Riders.
