In 1924, with more than 50 Mexican families in the Eagle Lake and Colorado County areas and growing, there was a strong need for English language-learning, as most of the early students could not speak English. Due to the need for Hispanic families to learn English, the Eagle Lake school board hired a special teacher in 1924 for the teaching of English to primarily Mexican children, to prepare them to enter the first grade in an English-speaking curriculum.
