I grew up in a small mill town in Massachusetts which had two shoe factories, three fabric and linen mills, and one optical company. Most of the kids in my town graduated from high school, went to work for one of the aforementioned companies, and lived much like their parents did, happy and fairly successful. I went back to my hometown two years ago and was shocked to see that every mill and factory had closed its doors, there were no jobs in town for the graduates unless they were highly skilled in specialty careers which I was not certain they were prepared for. In a span of 25 years, my town went from prosperous and vibrant, to broken and hemorrhaging.
