A massive house fire North of Columbus on Highway 71 eastbound Sunday, Feb. 9 resulted in an all-nighter for many local firefighters. Columbus Volunteer Fire Department, along with LaGrange, New Ulm, Ellinger, Frelsburg, Bernardo, Weimar, Eagle Lake, and Garwood Fire Departments, and assisted by Colorado County Sheriff’s Department, Colorado County EMS, San Bernard Electric and Colorado County Office of Emergency Management, were on the scene. Unfortunately, the home and the family’s belongings were lost, but fortunately, everyone in the home was able to safely get out. Columbus VFD Fire Marshal Brent Gorman said, “At the beginning of our attack, we were lucky for our safety. The structure slowly started collapsing due to fire spreading in the attic. We thank our area fire departments for all the help they provided. There is strength in our numbers, and nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.”
