John Edward (Johnnie) Kasper, owner of Kasper Meat Market in Weimar, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19 in Schulenburg.

He was born Apr. 16, 1932, the only child of John and Bertha Keiner Kasper. As a child, Johnnie attended St. Michael School where he was recently honored as a distinguished alumni. He graduated from Weimar High School and Blinn College in Brenham.

Johnnie married Aileen Ulrich in Ammannsville on Dec. 29, 1953.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed in El Paso. Upon his completion of service, he and Aileen returned to make Weimar their home. He joined his uncle, Steve Kasper and his father, John, Sr. in the family meat market in 1957. The meat market was his pride and joy and he loved his customers. He never knew a stranger and always had a smile on his face.

Johnnie was a devoted member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

He was active in the Weimar community serving as a Little League coach, a 63-year member of the Weimar Rotary Club, a member of the American Legion Post where he held many offices and also a member of the Knights of Columbus obtaining the rank of fourth degree.

Some of Johnnie’s hobbies he enjoyed were going to and watching the Houston Astros baseball games and also taking care of his cattle. He always had one of his pet dogs on his lap or by his side.

One of his many talents was being a master joke teller. He was always the life of the party wherever he went and folks looked forward to his next joke.

Johnnie is survived by his wife of 68 years, Aileen; his children Barney Kasper and wife Jimmi, Cynthia Kasper Seydler and husband Larry, Maurice Kasper and wife Connie, Jean Kasper Blaha and husband Freddie and Francis Kasper. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family is also grateful for his caregiver, Phoebe Palmer.

Visitation was Sunday, Aug. 22 from 3-5 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in Weimar. Rosary was recited at 5 p.m.

Funeral mass was Monday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church with visitation prior to the service beginning at 8:30 a.m.. Burial was at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Fr. Wayne Flagg officiated.

Pallbearers were Colin Kasper, Dylan Blaha, John Michael Blaha, Zane Blaha, Michael Alletag and Mason Hubenak. Honorary pallbearers were Eric Kasper, Casey Kasper, Donnie Head and John Gilbreath.
