Lawrence G. Korenek, 89, of the Brushy Community in Columbus, entered into Eternal Rest Monday, Jan. 31.

Lawrence was born in the Brushy Community July 30, 1932, the son of John and Bertha “Betty” (Prihoda) Korenek.

He married the love of his life, Vlasta Janish on Nov. 18, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fayetteville. They were blessed to have shared 63 years together.

At the age of 13 after his father’s passing, Lawrence completed his schooling and began working on the family farm raising cotton and corn crops. Lawrence then worked for 30 years in the oil field while still maintaining everything on the family farm.

Lawrence was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Ellinger. For 57 years, Lawrence and Vlasta were caretakers of the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. He was a very faithful man and a devoted husband and father. Lawrence held a special place in his heart for his beloved grandchildren: Julie, Stephen, and Luke.

Some of his hobbies included gardening, farming, and spending time with his family. He always looked forward to planting tomatoes and onions every year.

Lawrence is survived by his loving wife, Vlasta Korenek of Columbus; two sons: LJ Korenek of Columbus; and James Korenek and wife, Aimee of Fayetteville; three grandchildren that Lawrence adored so much: Julie Korenek, Stephen Korenek, and Luke Korenek two sisters-in-law: Mary Rainosek and husband, Frank of Austin; and Clara Gerik, of Fayetteville; two brothers-in-law: Robert Janish and wife, Evelyn of Bellville; and Joe Janish and wife, Diane of Fayetteville; eight nieces; 12 nephews, and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers-in-law: Paul Janish, Peter Janish, Alois Janish, Steve Janish and Frank Gerik; three sisters-in-law: Annie Janish, Angeline Janish and Charlene Janish; four nephews; and one great niece.

A visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 8 at St. Mary Catholic Church of Ellinger.. A Holy Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Feb. 9 at St. Mary Catholic Church of Ellinger. Burial is in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, mass offerings may be given in Lawrence’s remembrance.
