Earline Margaret Canik Shimek, of Fayetteville, passed away Nov.12 in Columbus at the age of 82 years. She was born in Lone Oak, Texas on her parents’ family farm June 24, 1937 to Alfred and Emma (Meyer) Canik.

Earline was welcomed home by her older brothers Raymond and Leroy and years later a younger brother Al Gene. She attended Boggy Branch School near Frelsburg and then attended Columbus High School. Years later she attended Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, graduating in 1989 with an Associate’s Degree in Secretarial Business.

Earline was a previous member of the Catholic Daughters in Columbus and recently a member of the Altar Society at Sts. Peter and Paul in Frelsburg. She worked at Berger Grocery in Columbus in her earlier years and took in ironing along with babysitting. Earline enjoyed keeping children in her home for family and friends throughout the years. She dearly loved the children she cared for as if they were her own. She also loved working and living on the farm, feeding her cattle, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens and would spend many hours enjoying the outdoors. She was a big pet lover and never went anywhere without her beloved dog Chucky.

Earline was preceded in death by her parents; Alfred and Emma Meyer Canik, infant son; Joseph Shimek, brother; Raymond Canik, sister-in-law; Mary Canik, godchild; Rhonda Canik.

Earline is survived by her son; Al Wayne Shimek and wife Martha of Garwood, daughter; Amy Faye Shimek of Columbus, grandchildren; Daniel Wayne Shimek of Ft. Worth, Adam Dane Shimek of Garwood, Lauren Shimek Hegarty and husband Joel of Houston, Everett John Shimek of Garwood, great grandchild; Nora Virginia Hegarty of Houston, brothers; Leroy Canik and wife Peggy of Fayetteville, Al Gene Canik and wife Carolyn of Frelsburg, sister-in-law; Janice Canik of Columbus.

Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Frelsburg. A parish prayer service and rosary were held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home. An Altar Society rosary was held at church on Friday at 9:30 a.m. Funeral service was Friday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Frelsburg with Father Michael Lyons officiating. Burial followed at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Frelsburg.

Pallbearers were grandsons Daniel Shimek, Adam Shimek, Everett Shimek, Joel Hegarty, nephews Randy Canik and Bill Wick.

Honorary pallbearers were brothers Al Gene Canik, LeRoy Canik, nephews Rusty Canik, godchild Gerald Canik, David Canik, Aaron Canik, nieces Alyssa Bookout, Ashley Glueck, Kathleen Wick, Debbie Rerich, granddaughter Lauren Shimek Hegarty and good friend Shawn Gallagher.

Memorials can be given to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1031 Church Lane, New Ulm, TX. 78950.
