Congratulations are in order for Jackson White, a Katy Junior High student, for a district winning essay. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) sponsor an annual essay contest for students in the fourth and seventh grades. Jackson submitted his essay to the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter in Columbus Texas which is one of 19 chapters in District VIII. This year’s topic was “Strong Pioneer Women during the Texas Republic”, and Jackson was inspired to write his essay on the chapter’s namesake. Throughout the state, thousands of essays are submitted, each chapter presenting their own winner. From those a district winner is then selected. The state DRT headquarters issued a certificate and check to each district winner.
Read moreOur 3 Angels - which is a nonprofit founded in memory of Amber Polasek, Brandon Schulze and another close friend – recently made a $500 donation to Turtle Wing Foundation. Their fundraising events allow the nonprofit to provide help for those in need and help support a brighter future for the youth of our community. One of the founding members, Carol Polasek , has a great nephew who has autism and participates in Turtle Wing Foundation activities. That is one of the reasons they selected Turtle Wing, believing in their mission to “help children in rural areas with learning challenges achieve their full potential”. Additionally, president of the Our 3 Angels, Annette Jasek, was a bus driver for many years and became acquainted with some of the young adults participating in the Aged Out Programming being offered by And Then and being underwritten by Turtle Wing. Amazing local charities such as this are one of the many reasons Turtle Wing is able to serve so many families with children with learning differences in our rural area. Turtle Wing Foundation helps provide Early Intervention, Supplemental Services and Community Education & Advocacy programming to children and families from Colorado, Fayette, Lavaca and surrounding counties with academic, social-emotional, behavioral and/or developmental needs.
