Some of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred” were settling down along the rich Colorado River bottom, not far from Eagle Lake, in what would later become Colorado County. They began arriving as early as 1823. The river, fertile soil, and the lake were attractions, well before the first railroad, and the founding of Eagle Lake, in 1859.
