Venus Bias Emmons, born July 24, 1930 to James Mack Bias and Savanah Craine Bias, passed away Aug. 22 in Columbus. She was born into a family of six brothers and three sisters in Iseletta – on the outskirts of El Paso. She met and married G.W. Emmons Jan. 24, 1948. They traveled around a lot due to G.W.’s work in the oil field. Venus and G.W. had two children – Brenda and Darrell, and settled in Columbus in 1970.

She was born near Weimar on Feb. 14, 1928 - a Valentine baby - to Lillie Sophie Mehrens and her husband Urban Rodgers. Lillie Sophie Mehrens died in 1932, leaving Urvine and her older sister Lillian motherless. After their mother’s death, Urvine and her sister Lil went to live with their Aunt, Minnie Mehrens (Wink). Urvine’s earliest schooling was in Glidden, but in time the girls commuted with their Aunt to attend school in Columbus. Urvine and her sister were both Columbus High School cheerleaders. Urvine said, “I started high school the year WWII began, and I graduated the year it ended.”
Read morePhilip Stephen Fleming, 77, passed away Friday, July 17, in San Antonio. He was born Aug. 28, 1942, in Portland, Oregon, to Stanley Albert Fleming and Margaret Jean Tharp. Survivors include his son, Ric Stephen Fleming, of Raleigh, North Carolina; his sister Kaye L. Frey and brother-in-law Earl D. Frey of Cat Spring; two nieces, Kimberly L. Stanley and Kristy L. Peikert; and one nephew, Cameron B. Frey.
