(Austin, TX) – State Representative Ben Leman filed House Bill 1618, which would raise current petition signature requirements for the creation of hospital districts to prevent unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars. Currently, before a hospital district located wholly in one county may be created, the county judge of that county must receive a petition signed by at least 100 registered voters of the territory of the proposed district. If the petition is complete and accurate, commissioners court shall order an election by the people of the proposed district to determine if the district will be created and whether or not to authorize the levy of a tax.

As of Feb. 7, Texas hospitals were treating 9,957 COVID-19 patients, down from nearly 14,000 a month ago. The number of new cases in the past week was 123,239 — a 22 percent drop from the record high of 158,922 the week of Jan. 10, according to the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University.
