Bettie Ruth Hamm was born June 3, 1934 to Albert and Grace Shavers Johnson, in Colorado County.

She attended grade school and graduated from Columbus Colored High School, then attended Texas Southern University for one and a half years. Bettie decided to take first job in Houston working at the YMCA.

She attended church at Rose Hill Baptist Church on Holman Street in Houston, and worked for years at the old Herman Hospital cleaning the fifth floor surgery department.

Bettie met and married Julius Hamm, and born of this union were three children – Carol, Julius and Cynthia.

Bettie was also blessed with an older son, Gerald Wayne Johnson.

Julius Hamm, Sr. passed away Feb. 23, 1974.

Bettie moved home in June 1974, and was welcomed back in love and respect. She moved her church membership from South Park Baptist Church to Greater Smith Baptist Church, where she worked in the Sunday school and Mission.

Bettie was preceded in death by her parents, brother, husband, son and stepdaughter.

Bettie is survived by her son, Julius Hamm Jr.; daughters Carol (Jimmy) and Cindy (Harold); grandchildren Dorneischer, Gerald Jr, Anthony, Lauren (Tony), Brian Jr, Amber and Kayla; great grandchildren Gerald, Aurmoin, Matthew, Semaj and Ava.

Her brother James also survives Bettie, and sisters Brenda (Dennis), Misa Mae (Robert) and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Interment is in Willing Workers Cemetery in Columbus.
